Kotaku

Today, police confirmed the death of Desmond “Etika” Amofah, a well-known gaming YouTuber, after discovering him in Manhattan’s East River yesterday evening. Amofah’s body was found two days after police recovered his belongings on the Manhattan Bridge. Last week, he had published a video that appeared like a suicide note.

Although he has been on social media for a few years, I only discovered him last year. I was aware he was having some mental health issues and a few months ago the NYPD had to detain him over him over his mental health. Hopefully his family and friends can mourn.

Never heard of him. I'm no stranger to dealing with friends/family with mental disorders though. It sucks. RIP

The name kind of sounds familiar but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of his videos. Sad news to hear nonetheless. R.I.P. ?

Well dang, he was a Nintendo gamer too. I don't usually watch Youtube user videos, so I wasn't familiar with him. It sucks that even with so many fans and support, he couldn't maintain his life.

Sorry to hear about it. RIP.

Etika was always the hype guy that played Nintendo games and watched anime but I never sub to his channel, just kinda watch him from time to time. He was such a relatable person and funny man, RIP Etika & my condolence to the family.

Sadly he showed all the signs of someone who was gonna do it but he didn’t make it. People online teased him because he threatened suicide before but didn’t do it so instead of showing him support he got a lot of hate for it. I’ve been there before and I know how hard that kinda backlash can be. I wasn’t a huge fan but I’m really sad we lost another person to mental illness. RIP my man and my condolences to his family and friends.

They're morons out there that still believe depression is all in your head those people are trash and need to educate themselves. I don't want to go to deep into my depression but I got called a bitch for opening up about my depression on these forums recently and the mods here didn't even do shit about it. It pisses me off that depression isn't taken serious I know better not to open up here anymore when talking about mental health you get shamed most people here are cool but still got some assholes around.

He kind of stood out with his over the top reactions to game announcements and live streams. I won’t link his videos directly due to a possible TOS strike against me, but you can see some of his stuff on YouTube and Twitter and see why I won’t link it.

Anxiety and depression, contrary to popular belief, are physical issues. Unless someone suffers from such things or fixes such things, they really don't know much especially when telling people to get over it, it's all in your head, etc..,

While I didn't subscribe to him, he was one of the more well-known Nintendo YouTube streamers. It seems like he was apparently getting a lot of hate on social media, and he buckled under the pressure. He got too caught up in the social media world, and couldn't mentally handle the social media negativity that inevitably comes with social media fame. The dude didn't get the psychiatric help he needed. Mental health is a serious issue that all too often gets ignored or downplayed.

P.S. I can imagine him playing Smash Bros with Saturo Iwata in the afterlife. RIP to the both of them.

Are you saying it's not real? depression is a chemical imbalance you can be rich and have all the woman and friends you ever wanted but the lack of serotonin and dopamine will make you miserable.

Yes and what is your point?

Hopefully its not to start saying things must be treated with pharmaceuticals.

Like i said stress can cause a miriad of issues.

They don't have to be but they help some people but most people try to avoid them due to the bad side effects of antidepressants. They're natural ways to release serotonin and dopamine through supplements and getting sun and exercise. It really depends on how bad the persons depression is everybody reacts to medication or supplements differently.

You got poor reading comprehension from education? Lol, sorry .

If your cure for depression is taking a pill which your body can acclimate to, build a tolerance to, and thus requiring increased dosage over time until it no long has an effect, then its fair for a person to say cigarettes are their cure for stress. Same concept.

If you know what it is I wouldn't think you'd be suggesting it (anxiety/depression and/or stress) is purely mental.

Ummm no that's you, and I never said a pill is a cure for depression it just helps treat some of the symptoms of it. There is no cure for depression but there are some ways to combat it.

No, you do. You asked a question, i answered, and then responded to the answer in a completely different way as if you made something up in your head. You said, "so you think it doesnt exist..." and i replied, "no what makes you say that."

Theres most certainly a cure. It doesnt even need curing. Ask any elder if theyve suffered from depression and most will would be lying if they havent dealt with it in some form. Thus is life.

Worst forms tend to stem from when people do bad things to other people.

WTF you make no sense man you have no clue what depression is you need to educate yourself. Everybody goes through hard times yes and gets the blues from time to time but that isn't what depression is. Depression is long lasting and life threatening if not treated properly you just don't get over it that's not how depression works.

I dont use auto correct on my phone. And, for simple conversation like on this forum its not worth the effort when 99% of people can infer what you are saying.

Dont be so high strung. Not everybody is put to get you. Believe it or not, some people bring depression unto themselves. Say for example a child in school started bullying another kid, or tried to single someone out, later in life that bully will undoubtedly feel a degree of depression from those actions.

But thats minor, imagine having an adult mind amd doing something similar. Thus is karma. Some people deserve it. Not saying you do, but i know this group in chicago that has become insanely bitter, almost like they hate life so much they take it out on others. I dont get it. They keep digging their hole deeper and deeper. So sad. They even get kids involved. Crazy.

Wonder what caused such a push for the individual. The internet and youtube can be a nasty place. Maybe there was an abundance of real life trolls. I cant believe people stoop to the level they do. Faceless pusseez; its why i just dont go on youtube or google or any of it. This site, and if im going to buy something. Everything about it i pay very little attention to. Heck i dont even carry a cell phone around, most of the time.

The internet has just become so toxic and people are addicted to it.

@GTR12: "Who cares?" Clearly, you do. Or else you wouldn't be posting in this thread. If you didn't care, then you would've just ignored this thread. And it's odd how you single-out this thread out of the thousands of worthless threads on this forum...

Either way, if a celebrity commits suicide, then that's noteworthy. What could drive someone who is famous and successful to suicide? That's a question that needs answers. And we can only get answers by studying and analysing case studies like this.

My condolences.
