Hello OTer's, have you catch the latest new episode of Samurai Jack? What did you think of it? Personally, I thought it was great! It was nice seeing them staying true to the hand-drawn art design, despite having to move from paper to digital. I'm glad that they're not over goring the blood shed, and still keep true to the first 4 seasons.

So, this season story arc has 7 girls born to be raised to kill Samurai Jack, and are claimed to be the daughters of Aku.

Jack has still not found a way back home or defeated Aku, but Aku's time travel spell has rendered Jack ageless. During this time, Aku destroyed nearly every method of returning to the past and Jack lost his sword at some point, forcing him to rely on modern technology such as firearms, explosives and a heavily-armed motorbike. Despite becoming disillusioned and haunted by the past, Jack still continues his journey.

I thought it was astounding. Genndy Tartakovsky is amazing at action sequences and visual story-telling.

The sequence where the little girl looks through the crack in particular was fantastic.

not gonna watch it. I wasnt all that into Samurai Jack back then.

But.... Im really love that an old series can come back, you never really see that. Thats awsome, and I wish it can happen more often.

I watched it the other night , and it seems like the show didn't lose a step at all. Im happy that Genndy Tartakovsky is doing something that will be appreciated by fans--it seems like his talents are wasted doing Hotel Transylvania.

Well...

it certainly made a return much better than Teen Titans Go or Powerpuff Girls did. That much is for certain. As for the show, it looks like it transitioned well. The pilot episode, while not great, still should do more than suffice for any fan of the original show.

The PTSD visions were very well done -- just like the rest of the episode. Fantastic way to start of the final season.

Episode 2 is tomorrow, so I will update the topic title! It should be good as Jack will meet with the Daughters of Aku. So far, Aku has yet to make his season debut, but it will be interesting how he will sound like since Mako Iwamatsu passed since 2006. Greg Baldwin has done a good job matching Mako's voice acting in Avatar: The Last Air bender. Let's see if he can match Aku?

The scene were the 7 assassins walk in the graveyard seems like a pretty obviose homage to Ecstasy Of Gold.

Didn't notice any diff tbh.

I like even though they matured the show a little, they kept the humor in and didn't go David Cage.

Just realized rewatching the graveyard scene, wasn't just a homage to Ecstasy Of Gold, with the fading bug he combined it with the tension building shootout sequence typical of a Sergio Leone movie.

Reminded me alot of A Few Dollars More when Col. Mortimer basically knows he's going to lose.

It makes me miss Mako's performance that much more (he has that slightly sinister yet playful tone that's not quite there), but overall the voiceover performance is solid. Love the touches of humor in the first few minutes of the episode.

And like uninspiredcup pointed out, the Ecstasy of Gold reference was great, along with the rest of the episode. Definitely interested to see how things will play out with him emotionally the way his encounter with them ended.

Hmmmmm....... They say that Aku destroyed all time portals. Who knows? Maybe it's still out there! Also Aku doesn't know that Jack lost his sword.

I love how it contrasted the light comedic scene of Aku complaining the infallible hero, to Jack contemplating suicide, running for his life and hiding in a coffin with dilated pupils gripping a sword in fear and eventually tossing himself into oblivion.

Fantastic as well how he gradually has his heavy armor and cloths stripped away and ends up running around like a scared hobo in rags.

Instead of jarringly or obnoxiously adding sprays of blood all over the place like a typical anime show would with a ratings change it's directly incorporated into the story-telling itself.

If it just started off dark and ended dark, I think it would have been far less effective.

I mean you only need to look at Batman VS Superman for that. Hell, The Dark Knight has that problem imo.

He was asked this in a Q&A but completely dodged the qeastion. From the episode and the comic it wouldn't be surprising if they go down a King Conan route.

Would be ironic given who narrated it the sequences - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qih55rWcsvM

Yes, it was indeed! He has never killed a human life before. But, his father did killed but for reason of self-defense which applies to Jack doing the same as he was defending for survival.

Yup.

Although, I thought he killed in the bounty hunters episode, but it seems they survived the ordeal.

My favorite scene was towards the end, when the last one was on hold and she just yaps how he needs to die, and Jack just simply let go and gave no fuqs

There was no new episode this past Saturday night, on account that the Toonami programming was pre-empted for the season premiere of Rick and Morty, run on a loop. As far as April Fool's programming goes, it wasn't a bad consolation prize. My guess is that it'll be back next week as scheduled with episode 4. Rick and Morty, is allegedly coming back sometime this summer.

Good! Inside the belly of the beast and Jack decides to spare his assassin. But that ending shows how much different Jack is compared to how she was raised. But that next preview has me excited for the return of the Scotsman!

Another visually stunning episode. Dem purples.

I think the final scene would have been better with any dialogue though, putting the flashback sequence of the ladybird, directly next to the scene was abit too blunt. They could have put that at the very start of the episode, or replaced the scene where she looks through the crack (or optionally added to it).

The stuff with Jack interacting with her was great, but the final scene was as subtle as a brick.

The final shot where she sits in directly in the middle of the screen mimicking Jacks posture was reminiscent of the final (well second final) scene of The Seven Samurai where the teenage guy stands between the farmers and the Samurai.

The action scenes in the last episode were better but the episode here as a whole was better paced. The second episode will probably remain the best episode I think, but if they top it, great.

Strong opening but the Jack/Ashi stuff kinda felt all over the place.

Thought the Demon Samurai was symbolism but I guess like the wolf it's also literal. Reminds me alot of weird ass demon thing in The Bruce Lee Story.

Wow! Episode XCVII was so scary and funny at the same time! I like the funniest parts with Scaramouche and the whole bar thing, especially with the Popeye look-alike and the cussing bartender! I also like the part in the disco where everyone makes an "S" with their hands and literally sings the praises of the Samurai! And the scary battle for Jack's life in the cemetery! Wow! Overall, a great episode!

Very fun episode, I liked the little dance sequence.

The Scaramouch B-story didn't seem to serve much purpose, I guess they will expand on that in the next final episodes.

I thought this one was terrible, outside of the final couple of minutes. Rather than focusing on Jack and his demons they focus on Ashi aimlessly wandering and that ridiculous robot that can somehow move around despite not having a body (the robot was just filler).

Every episode this season has been, at least, a 9/10. This was at best a 4 or 5

I disagree. The character she meets are from the original series Jack helped. As she starts to learn of his work, she begins to more definitively change and consequently saves Jack when he's about to commit Seppuku by enforcing that idea.

The first 4-5 episodes are very barren and isolated, Mad Max like where he's an inch away from doing himself in. The previous episode we get a wider view with Scotman more or less spelling out he's inspiring people, in contrast to the scene of Jack wandering off to commit suicide under the impression it was all for naught.

While won't deny it was probably abit meandering fan-service and that's Ashi's character is maybe getting too much focus now (she's basically been the main character for the last three episodes) I think it did have a point that served narrative to a nice conclusion of the character being renewed.

I agree the final scene was very well done, but everything else was pointless. This was shown when Ashi was trying to reassure Jack and was unable to do so until she mentioned the children he did not kill. This shows that all the rest of the episode, Ashi being exposed to the good deeds Jack has done in the 50 years, was pointless (fan service as you put it) -- because it was the children that caused him to wake up and destroy the Horseman.

They could have used the time spent on showing Ashi walking around and used it to show the Horseman, who has probably been the primary antagonistic character in this series, convincing Jack he needs to commit seppuku for his failures.

___

This is kind of a downside of this series being such incredibly high quality up to this point. I consider the Daughters of Aku vs. Jack (Episode III) as the best Samurai Jack episode there is, and this episode comes nowhere that one.

I started to watch the show again. I haven't seen it in 13 years when the last episode at the time aired and I was annoyed how the show didn't have a proper ending. Hopefully we finally get one now that Samurai Jack is back again.
