And what I mean is, the sequel that devastated you the most, not necessarily the worst quality sequel ever.

The first real book I ever read was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I was in second grade so it took about a week, but I managed to finish it. And then I saw the movie (Secret of NIMH) and loved it, even though it strayed quite far from the original story (no stone or magic shit in the book). No, I'm not a furry (ignore the username for a moment), it's just a really good movie that I still throw in and watch with the youngins.

Seriously, it's coming on Fox twice this month...if you haven't seen it give it a watch.

So...my sister drops her kids off today so she can finish some Christmas shopping and throws the Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue on the table.

Damn, I didn't even know there was a sequel. Well, not to the movie anyway...I have read the book's sequel: Racso and the Rats of NIMH...which was okay. I didn't feel like throwing it out the window or anything, and I'm glad I read it, but reading it once was enough.

So here I get all giddy, get everyone situated and throw the disc in.

OMG, this isn't...WTF is this shit? They didn't...what in the hell? They're SINGING?!

The art sucks, the animation sucks, the character design sucks, the acting sucks, the plot sucks, the...THIS MOVIE SUCKS.

****.

:(

I is sad. One of the greatest animated films of all time just got shit on. We're talking post-Mexican-food-and-tequila soft-serve power-shit while being down to two squares of TP. Seriously, who the **** thought this was a good idea?

Can I sue? Someone? Please?

Urrrhhggg...

Well...at least there's the rumored reboot. Right?

Hollywood is remaking The Rats of Nimh as a CGI extravaganza.

...

****.

I never understood that one. How do you take a R-rated T-and-A comedy, remove all the good stuff and make it a PG-13 sequel? Not to mention the two other made-for-TV sequels.

Jurassic Park 2 god what a mess that movie was. Not only was it just a bad movie you could just feel all the creativity and passion sucked out of it.

I guess personally my biggest disappointment in the theatre was Ghostbusters 2 which, though watchable for bits here and there, overall was a HUGE drop in quality from the first and the whole "making New Yorkers all happy" bit was just painfully embarrassing to witness.

The horror.

I remember the planned remake that was supposed to come out back in 2007, but it was shut down two weeks after filming began. Supposedly, the studio head was disappointed with the dailies.

Men in Black II: 5/10

US Marshals: 6/10, this is the sequel to The Fugitive, I mean it is such a fvcking rehash, an innocent man is frame and blah blah.

Mission Impossible 2: 6/10

Saw 2: 6/10, became a standard horror flick.

Iron Man 2: 1/10 so horrible and stupid beyond words.

The Michael Bay Universe 2: Even more explosions.

Anyway, I thought Exorcist 2: The Heretic was pretty god awful.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

An atrociously made movie that, while I enjoyed the previous iteration a lot as a teenager (more I think due to the extension of the universe rather than the movie itself, i.e. in video games), ruined practically everything I loved about The Phantom Menace. It focused far too much on dialogue (which was terrible) and Anakin's and Padme's relationship. The battle sequences were also incredibly bland and overly showy. Not the simplistic elegance of the original trilogy.

The Dark Knight Rises

I *love* The Dark Knight. Like, I've seen it probably 20 times love it. But Rises never struck me as either enjoyable nor well-made. It seemed overly politically motivated and way too much of a cluster-**** of ideas that didn't coalesce into a proper Batman story. After the sequence in the football stadium, that's when it all fell completely apart and I very much lost interest.

Pretty much every sequel Disney has ever made. Maybe Aladdin 2 tops the list because the entire frigging movie was "Genies can't kill anyone!" "But it's amazing what you can LIVE through!"

That's odd, no matter how hard I try I can't think of such an instance. What kind of confounded me after thinking about it is the fact that I'm unable to recall watching anything that had or got any kind of a sequel.

No, I'm just very picky and meticulous with the things I watch, I'm just hard to please. And from personal observation, the vast majority of franchises that get a sequel in general suck to varying extents. They either originally suck or their quality progressively deteriorates with the introduction of every sequel which is also directly proportional to the order of the sequel itself.

Or you can say that the vast majority of high quality franchises would most likely choose to do without the whole business of sequels. You can look at it from either perspective.

Sequels for the most part are there to milk the franchise and to get the most of it after either being received positively by the public or managing with the debut of the original work to build a solid and loyal fan base to exploit.

How about Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2. How could you take a classic AAA title like Baby Geniuses and make a sequel that tarnishes the reputation of the first film.

Yeah, good fundamentally sound game. But it bridged Resident Evil from survival horror to the fucking mediocre action shooter that it is today.

My most hated are the sequels to The Land Before Time. The first movie was awesome, my favorite growing up, it was very dark for a kids movie, and the end is really the only moment of the entire thing that's happy. Then the sequels comes out and while the second and third are watchable they are ruined by the much more lighthearted tone and constant singing, and the ones after that just get worse and worse.

Some others I would mention are:

  • Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
  • Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince
  • Jurassic Park III
  • Shrek the 3rd
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • The Dark Knight

Movie: Wishmaster 2 and all sequels, still enjoy watching the original and it's easy to tell that it's the only one with Wes Craven's name attached to it.

Game: Golden Axe: Beast Rider, way to bring shame upon a classic gaming series Sega.

Terminator Salvation. I was sitting there having to remind myself that it was a movie and not a horrible television pilot episode. Everything that has Terminator in the name was better than Batman pretending to John Connor. Sam Worthington was the only thing worth seeing on that movie. The cgi Arnold face...

I didn't think Ghostbusters II was that bad. The villain was never going to be as cool as that Sumerian deity from the first, but it was still very entertaining and character driven. Plus, anybody who saw it when they were 8 years old and says that ghost version of Janosz didn't scare the crap out of them is lying.

Troll 2 has to be the most shameless abuse of a film title in history. The "original", although not much of a horror, was a reasonably fun slice of 80's cheese in the style of Gremlins. The "sequel" was an unrelated amateur horror about some killer goblins, which got its title thrust on it by some studio desperate for a quick buck. It gets a lot of undeserved publicity as being 'so bad, it's good'; but even the unintended entertainment value you'd expect (from its comical title if nothing else) just isn't there.

The movie deviates quite a bit from the book but it's still a damn good movie. If you haven't seen it, it's free on Hulu.

It's also on Netflix as well--at least until Jan. 1. If you got a subscription, I say watch it there, if only to avoid sitting through the commercials on Hulu.
