it stops sounding like a word? Like you lead yourself to believe that its not a real word for a second? I'm wondering if anyone knows why this happens as its a pretty unreal experience.

Well, happened to me today when I was in Physics with the word 'spectrum', I was literally thinking to myself, "Did I spell this right?".

that happened to me except with "shampoo"Yes! YES! YES!!!
It used to happen to me a lot a few years ago.
Although I would describe it as the word losing its meaning in my head. I could only listen to the sound it makes but the object of reference was not connected.
At that point I guess, due to the redundant repetition of it, the lexical type ceases to function as a substitute response, since its repetition is not evoked by a real stimulus but its just a repetition for no reason at all.
Ahem... 8)
But seriously, it did happen to me. It was funny/amusing/interesting.
