Normally a company will give you 5-7 days sick leave. Do you guys use the all up during the year ? I have to say, i do, even if its just a day where i had some other appointment i use them for that. My company is cool with allowing us to use them. How about you guys ? And yes, i get paid for them. Some companies believe it or not, don't pay you while your out sick. I find that disturbing. But it does exist.

No I don't use my sick days unless I'm sick. I do use vacation and personal days though. Never know when you might need your sick days. Would suck to be out and not paid. Plus you can turn them in when you retire. And I hope to retire relatively early.

untracked paid sick leave. if i'm sick, i call in sick. if not i go to work. i don't take advantage of their generosity

i'm not sure how many days a year i could actually get away with calling in sick before management starts to have an issue with it.

All the jobs I've had they never paid you, so I worked even if I was feeling a little ill.

@LJS9502_basic - At my job if you don't use them, you loose them at the end of the year. No cashing out, just a loss.

My former employer gave us vacation days and personal days, both based on the duration of your tenure with the company. Personal days were used for sick days or whenever you just didn't feel like coming to the office, and both were paid.

My new employer has "unlimited" sick days, with the caveat that if you abuse it, they'll ask for doctor's "notes". Of course, under my previous "personal days" benefits, I used them all. They were use-them-or-lose-them in nature. Under my new employer's policy, I haven't taken any sick time because I haven't been sick.

Unlimited sick days ! WT .. Wow ! I don't get it. After being out 6-7 days it becomes disability. So i guess you can be out 3 days at a time unlimited.

@TheHighWind Dude, that sucks ..

I am a contractor so I don't get any benefits of any kind.... This last week my daughter has been home sick so I've missed an entire week of work with no pay compensation. We are already tight on money this month as it is because my wife had jury duty for a week last month and they pay you hardly anything.

If I didn't get paid, I wouldn't take them unless I had a good excusve. If I got paid... meh, I'd have to have a good reason too, I'd like to save them for that sense of security that I might need them, and then maybe toward the end of year try to cash them in why I got them.

Every place I've worked they didn't and don't have sick days they have PTO. The difference is that if you call in sick it's considered an unexcused day and you are only allowed so many per time period before you can be fired.

I have found my employer is actually very generous with sick time. I accrue a small amount every month and it never expires, so at least I know that if I underwent a health or family emergency, it's there for me to use. I just hope I never have to use it that much.

I have unlimited sick days (up until FMLA or short term disability kicks in). I use two or so a year :-P

It's unethical to misuse sick days for other affairs or vacation. If your employer is generous enough to grant you such a facility have some respect and integrity. If your rationale is "**** my employer, he deprives me of this or that" don't work for him.

And in Norway your employer has to pay when you are sick... Though after 16 days in a row, the government takes the bill, with all the extra hazzle.

I think the law is the UK is your allowed up to 5 days after that you need a Doctors Notes. It's up to the employer to figure out if your taking the piss. Amazingly, I've always had an extremely good attendance despite a self inflicted disadvantage. As contradictory as it sounds I handle my vice responsibly.

It's funny as I was the third worst person for attendance during my 5 years at Secondary school, second only to a boy who got expelled for assaulting a teacher with a knife, while drunk. The winner went to a girl who died in a house fire on the 2nd year.

Kind of rely on our income so no use messing around.

I accrue my leave but I only use my sick leave when I'm actually sick. I only take annual leave.

I show up every day to work - even after breaking my hand. Not a moment missed.
Between an employee who shows up rain or shine and one that took a few sicks days here or there - guess who gets their requested vacation time first? Paid, mind you. ;)

I haven't had sick days since 2012 when I was downsized. I've been contracting ever since and you don't get shit as a contractor.

Not really. Maybe once or twice a year - and I get paid for being sick. It's just a bit of a headache getting it through the managers.

We don't give sick days where I work. We give vacation days and personal days. Personal days can be used for sick time off or for whatever a person needs - kids, doc appointments, personal chores, extra vacation days, etc.

Yeah, or as a small business owner. You get no benefits. You dont work, you dont get paid.

I get 10 paid sick days a year at my current job. I don't abuse them - I've only taken one so far, and it was in an instance when I was legitimately sick.

I do believe they carry over too.

Kind of dishonest to use a sick day for non-health related reasons.

I only used a single sick day in the four years I've been working at my current job because I didn't feel like going to work the same day I got three wisdom teeth pulled. I took that day off just in case (and it wasn't that bad too, no pain, so I didn't need to take a day off really). Rain or shine or freezing cold, I'm there at work. I rather save them for emergencies.
