... it rested at the base of an active volcano? The city is not only the most beautiful city in the world, but also the most affordable to live in. Everyone and everything prospers. There's only one catch... historic and scientific evidence has plotted a timeline that points to an impending erruption that could level this city under a river of lava or bury it under ash from a pyrocrastic flow. You're looking at a potential erruption anywhere from five to two hundred years. It's easy to move there, easy to live there, but do you take the risk? You want to start a business and a family, and your best bet is to move to this city, but again, do you take the risk?

Personally, I think I might. I'd hope that we develop some kind of warning system that alerts us to an erruption early enough to evacuate. So, if I lived in this city, I'd make sure I save as much as I can in case I had to take off in a hurry.

Growing up my folks had a place in Hawaii, so I'm not afraid of living at the base of a giant, active, volcano.

No thank you. I dislike any and all things that may threaten the well-being of my home in terms of natural disasters.

Well if the volcano isn't going to erupt for a potential 200 hundred years, then yeah I guess would.

Yeah sure I would.

Even if the Volcano Insurance was quite costly the awesomeness of the affordable town would counteract this niggling expenditure.

I don't usually like to take risks, but I guess I would in this case, given the high quality of life there. I just hope that there'd be enough advance warning for everyone to evacuate in the event of an impending eruption.

a city at the base of an active volcano is not exactly what comes to my mind when I think about "the most beautiful city in the world" that being said, I wouldnt do it, even I prosper, chances are i'll lose everything when the impending eruption comes

Possibly, in this day and age, they'd be able to warn us when the eruption would happen. I'd just be sure not to get too attached.

Is that my only place of residence? Because if so, then I would choose to live somewhere else. If however that's just where my summer vacation home was located, then ok.

There are warning signs before a volcano erupts, right? I'd do it. Even if there weren't warning signs, I'd take the risk. I'd rather live a short life somewhere beautiful than a long life somewhere unpleasant and dreary.

No, I live in a pretty beautiful place as it is. And there's a little problem with languages that keeps me from moving to another country.

I think they can predict volcanic eruptions, as they're usually proceeded by lots of seismic activity. Not that they're 100% accurate, but at least its something.

I probably would live there and like yourself JPL, I would have a nice little savings account so that I could leave in a blink of the eye when there's an eruption about to happen.

Probably not permanantly. Maybe for a few years though, yeah. I'd try and live close to the water, and I'd own a boat so I could cheese it.

I've thought about a similar concept before. About going to school in / living in British Columbia (it's near the ocean, looks sexy, and the weather seems pretty good), but a nearby faultline and it supposedly being overdue scares me, even if it shouldn't (especially becuase it was the History Channel/Discover Channel that told me that...). It's across the country from where I live so I doubt I'd end up going anyway.

A big earthquake scares me more than a volcano because I figure I'd have a clearer a warning before an eruption.

Buy house there, /w volcano insurance. Construct high speed tram from my house to out of the range of the volcano. If volcano erupts jump on train and collect volcano insurance. If it doesn't erupt live happily ever after.
