Over the past few years Ive noticed that smoking cigarettes has become pretty restricted. You cant smoke in bars or in many public places and the tax on cigarettes is increasing. Does anyone think they might just flat out ban cigarettes just like weed or other illegal substances.

I doubt it just because of the sheer amount of people who are addicted and taxes from cigarettes brings a lot of money into the government. Its getting too hard to be a smoker though. I've been one for the past four years, but as of today it has been a week since I've had a cigarette. I had to quit because I can't afford the habit anymore. I rolled my own cigarettes and a bag of tobacco used to cost about $15, but with a HUGE tax increase on April 1st it went up to $40.

Nope, I hope more people start smoking so the average lifespan is in the 50s and 60s again! That way there's less people who'll get social security checks! :P

Remember when they tried to ban Alcohol? How do you think the general public would react to a substance they've become physically as well as mentally addicted being banned? ... The horror! ... I should have never quit.

I don't think they will and they shouldn't. Smoking helps a lot of people calm down.

There has been a smoking ban in pubs in Ireland and England... and I can say the pubs feel much more refreshing if you're a non smoker. Before the ban came in, they were filled with smoke which was uncomfortable if you didn't smoke cigarettes.

Anywhere other than bars though, I don't agree with a smoking ban.

No, I am just happy having it outlawed in bars and restaurants (where I live at least). Where I work, cigs are $6.50, still doesn't stop people

I highly doubt they will ever ban cigarettes. Think of the tax revenue that would be lost if cigarettes were banned, especially considering they are raising taxes on the product.

I have a question, could local governments potentially ban cigarettes?

2 packs a day = $12 = $84 a week When I rolled my own the average cost would have been $1.50 a pack which = $3 a day = $21 a week. Not bad at all, but with the recent tax increase rolling my own cigarettes would increase to $4 a pack = $8 a day = $56 a week. Even with the increase it would still be cheaper to roll, but not nearly as cheap as it was and its giving me enough reason to quit.

Ban it, no. The tobacco lobbyist's are way too powerful. But I think they will continue to raise taxes on them, making them to expensive for most people. I was paying about $2.99 a pack 3-4 months ago. Now it's $5.99 or so.

No, many people smoke and thegovernment always finds another exuse to increase the tax or add anothertax. I don't smokenor do Irecommendsmoking but I'm against a ban because one banleads to another. Banning just increases smuggling andsyndicated crime. I think we already have enough runners and gangsters. Runner meaning trafficker.

They won't be banning smoking, or not any time soon anyway.

I'm not a fan of smoking, and will never do it myself, but as long as I don't have to be around people who smoke in public, then fine, whatever, let them put all that gross cigeratte stuff in their body...

I hope no leisure drug ever gets outright banned in modern civil society. One could argue that the use of some drugs can passively affect the the health of others in the near vicinity, but if one is down the local pub/bar/nightclub to get drunk and have a good time, they should not complain about sucking in passive cigarette smoke.

I can understand butts being banned in restaurants and other public places, but not in pubs/bars/nightclubs. That is just socially and practically hypocritical.

The government makes far too much money from the taxes on cigarets to ban them.

No way, they enjoy all the money they get off of the industry in taxes. Why do you think the price keeps going up? They know people are addicted to them so they keep it legal and keep rising the price.

Nah don't think they'll ban cigarettes completely. Too much of an uproar if they do. They should keep it legal.

I think there will, but it will still be many years from now. You can't smoke in certain city's public streets anymore, so it's obviously getting more restricted. Or it will only get as far as only being able to smoke in your private property, no where else.
