Poll: Will the Gamespot forums get more traffic? (30 votes)

Yes 10%
No 77%
Maybe 13%

Gamespot forums seem to be very slow as far as posting and new threads are concerned ever since the big site re design recently. Do you think user traffic will pick up on the forums? Will there be an influx of new long term users or will old users return?I personally think traffic will stay around this level then slowly decay over the next 3 or 4 years.

GS had traffic because of the content, only the content can save them. I saw they brought a bimbo to do some videos, is she any good? Does any of the current content stands out from what is available on other gaming sites? I wouldn't know since I rarely check that side of GS. Just remember: if you build it, they will come.

Nope, it's all downhill from here.

I'm reminded of that one bit from Social Network:

Okay, let me tell you the difference between Facebook and everyone else, we don't crash EVER! If those servers are down for even a day, our entire reputation is irreversibly destroyed! Users are fickle, Friendster has proved that. Even a few people leaving would reverberate through the entire userbase. The users are interconnected, that is the whole point. College kids are online because their friends are online, and if one domino goes, the other dominos go, don't you get that?

And it's worth noting that during the last big transition the site was so broken and for so long it caused people to flee, the cutting of important features also contributed it's fair share to people leaving as well.

Maybe GameSpot should have put a little more thought into changing the site up, tested the new features out on a separate server. Give users incentives to participate in a the new site and offer feedback before going through with it. And made sure it was top notch, flawless, and wasn't going to cause a tizzy when it released.

Gamespot is the slowest, glitchiest site I know. I have no idea why this place is so slow to load, but the fact that even the smallest amateur sites are many times faster has to say something. The glitches are non-stop (currently having issues with the menu at top, bet you are, too) the spambots post more than users, and even though I've been flagging the spam, it's still there a day later.

The feeding tube has been removed and we're now just keeping vigil, waiting for the inevitable.

People should seriously lose their jobs over such mismanagement. It's an embarrassment.

Nah. They aren't a cool, well-established, functional, or emerging website. Their content is boring and I've never cared for their baseless game rankings. There is quite literally nothing this site going for it anymore. Even the cute emoticons from the days of yore helped make the old site distinct. Won't be long before it's forgotten.

What browser are you on? I used Opera before but it SUCKED so hard when it came to Gamespot. Now I'm on Chrome and it's flawless.

Waterfox/Firefox depending upon which PC I'm using. I can't stand the scrolling in Chrome.

And I know the slow speed isn't just me:

And yeah, glitches:

Still more than a year after the redesign this site is way too slow to load compared to other sites and the glitches and errors just reinforce a wall to give users a reason not to come back/sign up.

This site as sad as it is, is going downhill and continuing down that path. When you have to unban many users to "help" with traffic you have problems. As much as we make fun of other gaming websites, those websites are much more pleasing on the eyes and to be blunt, they work

I hate to say it but I think it is dead. I miss the glory days when you had to make some really crazy thread to stay on top, hell even in the first couple of pages and threads would reach lock limits in days, maybe hours if it was religion or something.

Maybe I should try Chrome. This site is slow with Opera :(

Yeah the forums are pretty crappy. Everyone notices it yet GameSpot doesn't do anything about it. There are only a handful of decent mods, the rest are overzealous tools going on power-trips. And it's so glitchy it's unbelievable. My menu is also all fucked up on Firefox.

I generally didn't mind the slow loading and various glitches but these past few days have been VERY annoying in that regard. The community is diminishing as is my incentive to post in OT - habit is the main reason I still visit this board. Though I still like the gaming section of the site and the Games discussion board so I don't see me leaving for good anytime soon.

GameSpot is one of the biggest video game news sites out there, so I highly doubt CBS will cut it down.

Also GameSpot is worth: $ 1,885,000,000

That is a lot of money.

I normally just hover around (as you can see 50 posts over years of being a member) and the "old times" of having so much to read and discussions is what made that happen. Lately noticed it was getting slow too. Where is everyone going if they are jumping ship here? I kind of miss my forum days and wouldn't mind being a part of a community again. (A few years ago I was a mod for one of the largest PS3 Forums)

I don't really like posting on IGN at all to be honest.

Nope. this is due to the idiot site managers who changed the format, as well as all of the ridiculous rules that ensure this place is politically correct as possible. Nothing kills a forum community faster than harsh moderation.

Karma is a *****.

When GS did the redesign and cut all the major features that made GS one of the best sites out there they pretty much gave the middle finger to the community that supported them. Not only did they cut some amazing features (Unions, feature user blogs on the front page and a lvln system for your account to name a few) they have shoddy reviewers whom I won't name (Kevin, Carolyn and Tom) who make Kotaku reviewers actually decent...that's pretty sad.

To me OT is dead because I was here last year before the changes and that sh*t was active as f*ck whereas now OT has maybe 50 active posters maximum. Threads that were made 2 weeks ago are still on the first page and most threads can't even get above 30 posts where back in the day threads would go over 100 in 24 hours.

I recently came back after an 8 month absence and am very likely leaving again within the week because the amount of spam threads is ridiculous and the amount of time they're up for is sad. I know that mods can't be here all the time, but before the overhaul I swear I never saw bot thread on the OT. Ever. IMO, it shows a lack of passion on the part of GS to continue to allow that to happen and overall, the "go f*ck yourself" attitude that was displayed last year when GS destroyed unions was the straw that broke the users' backs. I left after that because there are other forums that actually respect their user base and enjoys their enjoyment.

No.

They probably don't want them to either. They showed us their level of "care" when they made the switch over and essentially said they get substantially more comment traffic on one page than entire boards of discussion. And they care about site hits, not fostering a strong community.

It's very likely the reason why they still haven't fixed some of the issues with the forum or improved it's useability.

That was their response? Are they going to continue to get site hits without community?

Several mods came up with that excuse when it was first announced. And I think a couple of the site staff backed them up. They couldn't justify putting time and money into the community because they got a better traffic flow from meaningless comments on the front-page articles.
