We are living in an increasingly violent society where more often people are happy to use violence to solve their problems.

There were quite a few before WW2. Someone tried to assassinate Teddy Roosevelt (guess they couldn't handle how bad ass he was). He was shot and refused to go to the hospital until he finish his speech.

It could happen. It's pretty much impossible to give a public figure perfect protection.
