and perhaps more importantly, why was it created by this Chinese man

Lei Yixin. Instead of someone from the black community?

Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. The statue was in talks in the early 90s and it was only developed and displayed recently. Seems like they made some bad choices.

wasn't his whole point to have races be treated equally? I don't think it mattered if the artists wasn't black.

But still, don't black people want their main man reincarnated in a statue to be sculpted from darker rock?

well it seems to be made out of some type of stone or rock so yeah its white. It would be really corny for them to paint it. Also maybe the asian guy is a moument designer? why does it have to be made by a black person? Your missing the whole point of the monument really and quite frankly its goes against what MLK stood for.

Don't think you have to paint it in order to make it dark. This Stalin statue in Gori, Russia is dark.

The colour is the least of the problems of that sculpture.

Im no expert but the color seems to be determined by whatever the statue is made out of. It has nothing to do with skin color which is also part of what the MLK monument is supposed to stand for by the way. Also why is the stalin statue dark when he wasn't? Maybe it has nothing to do with the color eh?

Do you think everything made out of stone or rock is white?

Where did i say that? There exists in this world though materials of many colors this includes rocks and stone. Clearly whatever they used is white.

You implied it when you said "well it seems to be made out of some type of stone or rock so yeah its white", meaning that it's white because it's made of stone or rock.

Ill admit it isnt the best wording so i apologize for that but what i meant is that whatever they used is white. My original point though is that the color dosent even matter really.

I don't know. It seems like the statue would be more representative if it was made by a black person or group of black people rather than a Chinese dude. But I guess like someone said earlier, MLK's message was all races should get along. So the statue being made by a Chinese man isn't a farfetched idea from that perspective.

So a black person needs to make a statue of a black person for it to be the most representing? Do you have any idea how stupid that sounds? It's just meant to depict him. It doesn't take a black person to carve a statue of another black person.

Look at that aggressive stance that Chinese man portrayed MLK to have, he must have an anti-negro agenda.

Yeah I'd say its missing the point of racial equality when you make a huge deal of the freaking color of the statue and the race of its creator. I don't think MLK would approve at all.

You're right. We were just talking about this earlier in my multi-cultural art movements class today and this came up. I see both sides and was more curious as to if any black people think it's off course. But Bucked didn't seem to think so, so I guess that means it's OK. :P

Clearly sculptures are only meant to be done by people of the same generalized skin color, or else it is wrong and/or racist. The same goes for the stone used. Whoever did that Stalin statue must've been a truly evil human being.

The real answer is: why do you care, and why do you think it matters given the whole point of MLK's speech?
