I'm not talking about because people like his rap songs. There are college courses on 2pac. There is now a Broadway musical about 2pac. It's like people try to make him out to be some kind of ... I don't know what. They act like he was Martin Luther King Jr. or something.

Why is he seen as some kind of hero-like figure? Even in the mainstream... (college classes, broadway musical, etc.).

Well, I disagree with the genre being terrible. It's entertainment.

But treating 2pac like some kind of a prophet or something is what I don't understand.

As a Tupac fan, I can tell you that a lot of the more ghetto fans saw him as a hero with his anti-authority messages. Didn't hurt that his mother was a Black Panther. Of course, I like his music but some of his messages were questionable. Not to mention the rivalry between him and Biggie may have legitimately caused some people to get beaten or killed over where they came from.

Because when a famous person dies young, society has a weird habit of greatly enhancing the way it remembers that person.

A lot of his music had deep poltical/social commentary on America, specifically from the perspective of a young black male in the mid/late 80s and early 90s. Aonyone comparing his lyrics to that of other rappers can see that he was a deeper thinker then many others in the genre. However, since it was written from a young black male's perspective that demographic will relate to TuPac and hold him in higher regard then any other group. Oddly enough academics have always embraced his music. I think thats because it has an angry hipster/hippie element to it.

Because his music is poetry, (and he's one of the few rappers that is actually listenable) he used strong words to get his even stronger messages across. 2Pac was a social activist and many times used his songs to urge a change in society. He also read a lot of books on philosophers and their theories on how to better society

Jay-Z is a better live performer than both Wu-Tang and Eminem if you ask me. Live hip-hop is very hit or miss but Jay-Z is definitely one of the better ones.

They really weren't any different. He had some songs that were about certain issues... but most rappers have some serious songs. 90% of his music is about thuggery. And I know, because I like a lot of his music.

90% seems high but yeah, I agree with your overall point. Some people like to remember "Keep Ya Head Up" Tupac and block out memories of "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" Tupac.

Because he was a highly intelligent guy who wrote songs about the life a black man growing up around violence, racism and unjustice. It was kind of in his blood since his mother was in the black panthers.

Well this is how we gonna' do this:
f*ck Mobb Deep,
f*ck Biggie,
f*ck Bad Boy as a staff, record label, and as a mother f*cking crew.
And if you want to be down with Bad Boy,
Then f*ck you too.
Chino XL, f*ck you too.
All you mother f*ckers,
f*ck you too.
(take money, take money)
All of y'all mother f*ckers,
f*ck you, die slow motherf*cker.
My four four (.44 magnum) make sure all your kids don't grow.
You motherf*ckers can't be us or see us.
We mother f*ckin' Thug Life riders.
West Side till' we die.
Out here in California, n****
We warned ya'
We'll bomb on you mother f*ckers.
We do our job.
You think you the mob, n****, we the motherf*ckin' mob
Ain't nothing but killers
And the real n*****, all you motherf*ckers feel us.
Our shit goes triple and four quadruple
You n***** laugh 'cause our staff got guns under they motherf*ckin' belts
You know how it is and we drop records they felt
You n***** can't feel it
We the realist
f*ck 'em.
We Bad Boy killers.

He makes deep songs and he makes songs that are just for the club. Lots of rappers do that. Prime example right now is Macklemore, if you listen to his more personal songs you wouldln't even think it was the same guy behind Thrift Shop

Difference being Macklemore isn't elevated to mythical levels but yeah almost all rappers are hypocrites in some ways. It's just dumb that Tupac is praised so highly because lyrically he's nothing really special but his ability to craft a song together is godlike so I guess I can understand the hype + the whole death thing.

Biggie was better

Don't see what mythical levels have to do with it, you were talking about hypocrisy in his music and I'm just pointing out that when you are with a record label you have certain songs you have to put out even if its not your style. Lot people don't know that Tupac went to a school of arts and studied theater. Even in jail he spent his time writing screenplays. Dude wasn't an idiot and your typical thug like most people like to assume. He's not praised because of his rapping ability he's praised because he was something different in the rap game. He talked about teen pregnancy, wrote a song dedicated to his mom, talked about police corruption. Things most rappers at that time weren't even trying to talk about. Not trying to sound like a tupac fanboy because honestly there are only a few songs of his that I actually like but I understand where the hype thing is coming from. It has nothing to do with his death, he isn't the only prominent rapper to have been killed and yet no one really talks about them anymore.
