Why does the History Channel show all of this crappy conspiracy stuff now?

Has to do with ratings. The historical documentaries are 10x more interesting than the stuff about conspiracies, or the pawn shop shows. I suppose they cater to the lowest common denominator. And the LCD wants to watch a show about that stuff.

Ratings. Anyone who is serious about watching a history program, lets says "WW2 in HD", will do so on youtube or Netflix. No reason to watch it on TV.

I'm sure they get most the their viewers from channel surfers who stop when they see aliens. No one is going to say "O ****, Benjamin Franklin" and sit there for 60 minutes.

Conspiracy shows bring viewers. Viewers bring ratings. Ratings bring commercials. Commercials bring money. It's the circle of TV. No. The pyramid of TV. No! The chain of TV!

They found a stable demographic that could be entertained by such notions as yetis/bigfoots/swamp monsters are actually aliens (srsly), and decided to try and appeal to them instead. But really all they were before was The History Channel (If All That Ever Existed Was Nazis), so yeah.

You really don't. When the channel sinks low enough to start showing shows about aliens and bigfoots you actually start to miss Hitler.

all those channels are ruined because of how stupid and superstitious everyone turned in the 21st century.

it's all conspiracys about how clones of elvis are working with ancient aliens to breed chupacabras to frighten teams of ghost hunters or some similar shyt these days.

i used to call history channel the hitler & conspiracy channel. because that's all they'd bother showing.

i haven't actually sat and watched the channel in years, but everytime i just view it's listings, it's mostly the same three things, something about WWII and Nazi's, conspiracy theory stuff (monsters, ghosts, aliens, illumaniati, nostradamus), or it's some crappy reality show "Ice Truckers!".

it is appealing the lowest common denominator.

Perhaps the reason for this is it appeals to the same people in the rural areas of the country. the people who still watch TV routinely, and share the same three interests.

don't give the internet too much credit, just as much BS documentaries online as well, it's just that frequency of viewing it is not determined by how many people will watch it.

I have The Science Channel, The Military Channel, Investigation Discovery, Nat Geo, and H2 practically next door to each other. The majority of shows I like (all documentaries) are on those channels.

I watch mainly The Universe, How the Earth was Made, and Ancient Discoveries on H2 plus the occasional Dogfights episode and other historical shows.

The Military Channel has all the weapons and warfare shows (historical and contemporary) I like including The Greatest Tank Battles.

Investigation Discovery has all the murder investigation shows (eg Dateline and Who the %^&* Did I Marry?).

Nat Geo has a variety of science, military, and investigative shows.

The Science Channel has other science shows such as Through the Wormhole and How the Universe was Formed.

I don't bother with The History Channel (the one that comes with Basic Cable). Too much reality crap.

The channel grouping would be perfect if TruTV was nearby.

There's still good historical stuff coming out. They're just not on The History Channel.

Take The Greatest Tank Battles for example, I just bought the first season DVD:

I wish The History Channel would show some of their earlier one-time shows such as Secret Russian Aircraft of WW2. Some of the concepts were quite interesting such as the concept of a flying submarine. Good thing I recorded the show with a DVD Recorder:

I actually like Pawn Stars, but that's the only thing one there that is decent anymore and it isn't historical either for the most part. I do really miss some of their older shows, though. I also liked some episodes of "Decoding the Past" when it was focused on prophecy garbage. I thought the Quran episode was pretty interesting for instance.

nope there has been a slow steady working away from superstition since the enlightenment and all of a sudden in the 21st century we have completely reversed the course of that.

Times are tough. TV is showing whatever brings in the ratings and $$$, and whatever isn't gets cancelled. Check out how the Sci Fi (Rebranded SyFy) channel from the science fiction channel to the paranormal channel. Go on TV guide and the majority of their stuff is about ghosts, ghouls, werewolves, etc.

Because some people watch TV because they want to escape life and watching something educational especially while in school is not escaping life. Also, some people think it's boring. The reason why they make tons of reality shows now because it is probably cheaper to make and cheaper to pay out (well, at least at first). Which I am guessing why they have those reality shows is to make money. Same with supernatural shows as of late. Can't tell you how many supernatural shows I have been suggested to by people and Netflix. Sheesh.

Watching TV is fun. If I had my way, every bathroom in the house (3 total) would have a TV. That way, I can watch my shows while dropping a load.

Showing real history doesn't get them ratings, so they've turned to redneck themed reality shows about pawn shops and truckers, and nonsense about ancient alien conspiracy theories. They've changed their slogan to "history made every day" so that they don't have to show actual historical programming. It's really sad how moronic and anti-intellectual American society has become. I used to love the History Channel in its old format.
