Be glad you haven't met me yet. Normally in the morning I just wave one finger at anyone who stares at me in the morning.

One of my friends earlier today told me to "have a good day" when I left. Made my day.

I don't know how kindness and decency = "meaningless crap"

Yes, all of those greetings are completely meaningless. I greet everyone by ripping their larynx out and stealing their credit cards.

How about "hello" is just as meaningless using that logic.

As a matter of fact, half of all verbal communication is meaningless, using that logic. Regardless of what it means exactly, it's a nice gesture. Jesus, you sound like you just quit smoking.

Depends on who I'm with. Some people are more enthusiastic/over the top and I usually greet them in kind, some just like a little fist pump and I'm fine with that too

Being congenial was not a vice, last I checked. People are insular enough as it is, without breaking social convention and being even more so.

It's a way of being politewhile greeting someone. You are wishing that that person has a good morning.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I say "good morning" it means that I am in a good mood and that I am happy to see the person to whom I am saying said phrase, which generally also includes the implicit notion that I feel that the morning has been good and that I hope that the same can be said for the other person.

When I have not had a very good morning, I don't say "good morning". :P

Do you just walk past them and avoid their gaze?

Its a way to be polite without having to have a conversation and staying on their good side with minimal effort done, if you don't do it then now is the time to start... as another said it's like hello, its just nice to say to others and in our society is almost expected

Well, I guess to be polite. Actually... I will rarely say it to people offline. Why? Sometimes people like to get an attitude about it. I don't say anything unless someone else says something first, I just keep walking. :P

Well, not like a flipping out attitude... just an evil glare or say something totally inappropriate. It seems like most people are either content or frowning. Not everyone is like that, though. :P

There is agreement among etymologists that Goodbye, Good morning, Good afternoon, etc. all derive from the word 'God.' 'Goodbye' specifically being a shortened form of 'God be with you' (God be = good bye). All these greeting and parting expressions are found in early English literature, recorded as early as 1200. There, you've now been shown to be unintentionally religious simply by being polite. :P

It's the small change of civilised behaviour that enables society to function in a productive manner.

No, I really don't think God is involved. I suppose dogs are all the workers of Satan because it's "God" backwards?
