What does good morning even mean? Nothing that is what it means. Have a nice day? What? I mean does this make sense to anyone? What the hell am I supposed to say when someone tells me, "good morning." Are we implying that the morning is good? That I should be having a good time during this morning? How about we just say hello and leave it at that? These things just anger me. Who came up with this crap?

It's a way of being politewhile greeting someone. You are wishing that that person has a good morning.

They've lost their meaning, so just consider them as greetings. No need to get angry.

Have the crappiest day ever :)

When you say "Good morning" it means you want them to have a pleasant morning. Same with "have a nice day". It's really not that difficult to figure out..

If it makes you angry, it seems you're just a negative or pessimistic person. Those sayings are just positive ways to greet someone or say goodbye to them. It's just a nice thing to say.

Of course it is an ignorant quesiton... that is why it is a question.... It is absurd to say these things. To answer the other person... yes I would rather someone tell me to go f myself.

Total bs. You claiming you wish well on others doesn't do anything even if it was true... you most likely do not give a crap... if you actually took interest in others you would take action to help those in need... instead of telling them to have a nice day which does zero.

Trying to brighten someone's day is more than what you're doing which is being negative and making my day a downer. What have you done to help? And what makes you think that the extent of my contributions ends at a greeting? It starts with it if anything.

More of a psychological thing. "Have a nice day" :) Saying it and meaning it make the other person happier and brightens their day. I don't understand why saying a nice thing like that is so terrible...

Its just polite and customary. Every culture has these different greetings and such. For instance, in Spanish, the term "adios" is typically translated into "goodbye" but it roughly translates to "God by with you". Like I said, its just polite.

Do you get pissed whenever you watch Star Wars and Obi-Wan says "May the Force be with you"?

It's just a polite greeting. Get over your angst.

Not everyone shares your way of thinking. I personally enjoy being told to have a nice day; while it may not have any positive effect on you, it does on me, and many others. Though I may be "just as screwed after being told these things", someone went out of their way to wish me a good day, and a good day I shall have.

Ok, so basically this conversation has gone like this:

Diablo112688: "It's stupid to greet people because you don't really want them to have a good morning."

[Insert person here]: "More often than not I actually do want them to have a good morning and by being polite I am doing my part in that"

Diablo112688: "No you arent"

[IPH]: "Yes I am"

Diablo112688: "No you aren't, I can read your head and you don't mean it" (I'm just assuming he can read minds since there is no way for him to tell you you don't want people to have a good day) ALTERNATIVELY he will rebut with "I can read other peoples minds and it doesn't help them out" (Once again, assuming he can read peoples minds because he is making a broad generalization about a group of people that is mostly untrue in my experience)

[IPH]: "Yes I am, and it makes me feel better when people say it to me"

Ok, so now this is where we are, how shall we continue?

Bottom line, it is polite to do so. Without these little nuances our society would not be what it is today. If you don't want to be polite, go ahead and don't say it, but if you take offense at people saying it to you you probably don't belong in society.

More like "good to see you this morning", but shortened to "good morning". People say it to be polite, or if they're in a good mood.

Diablo112688

If it's so meaningless to you, why do does it anger you? I try to be genuine as possible when talking to people, especially at my work. If I'm saying good morning or have a nice day or even how's it going today; I actually say it with genuine care and interest in how that person's day is going. Most people just say it to say it, cause it's the polite thing to do. However thoseARE empty words usually cause most people don't care how yourday is going or how you are.

These things are just good manners. Like holding the door open for a lady. Without them people are just negative, self-righteous dicks.

Yeah for sure... This guy is really bitter for some reason. I agree with him that most the people in society today (at least when dealing with strangers) use them as empty words with zero true meaning for the person they're being said to. Rather than let that fact make me upset and bitter though, I just try and make my saying of those words as genuine and meaningful for people. People can tell easilytell if you're being genuine and compassionate rather than just saying empty words to be "polite" and it does make a difference.
