I noticed that Bollywood actors look very different from the normal indian population. No, offense but I have been to India once, and have noticed this. For example their skin is very pale, and look almost mixed, they are have much different features from a typical indian, so their movies seem very unrealistic.

I know the same is in the west and everywhere else, but not to such a great extent. For example, most American movies have fat actors since many Americans are overweight. Most American films have some non white (most notably black ) main actors since about half the U.S is non white, most movies shot in London have some minority actors since London is very diverse, and most movies filmed in South America have brown or dark skinned people, since most of their population is non white and so on.

I have noticed that Bollywood actors look very different from typical indian people. Why would this be? Thoughts?

It is the same reason why Japan promotes blonde haired types when Japanese usually have black hair: Western appeal

Because society favors lighter skinned people, western standards of beauty. Same reason why television for Mexican and Mexican Americans often favors white Latinos. Same reason Asians get eye surgery and skin lightening treatments. Same reason people of color stay out of the sun. Same reason why many African American actors and actresses in Hollywood are more fair skinned. It's why Sheva in Resident Evil 5 looked like (in Yahtzee's words) a white person dipped in tea. If I had to guess, something along those same lines.

American television standards have rubbed off on all media industries. It's just the way it is when 90% of the worlds television content is curated and produced in one country.

My fav actor is Hritik Roshan Heh. Actors are good looking , so are the actresses but generally 90% commercial bollywood movies suck ( They only good for indian masses), globally they are garbage =P Thats why i stick to movies from Hong Kong or Hollywood 100 % )

Indeed. At least white American actors look like white Americans, albeit very attractive ones.

I've only seen a small amount of Indian produced TV shows but they all look as though they were edited by a 13 year old who just learned to use editing software and went completely over the top with it.

It's the same in a lot of countries: light skinned actors are favoured over dark skinned actors, unfortunately.

It looks like every one has to say no offence as soon as you talk about black people these days. You didn't say that in the paragraph about Americans.

@crazyguy111: So bollywood is against dark skinned actors? Even tho bollywood is massively popular in India. The audience, and media in the country are bias to whiter skin? Is anyone speaking about these things in Bollywood media, and what's culturally perceived as beautiful. I mean I know Hollywood is a big influence, but is it so influential as to convince a country of over a billion people to watch light skinned Indian actors as a preference because... why exactly. Who runs the major companies?

@PernicioEnigma: White people look like Brad Pitt. Black people look like Will Smith. Indian people look like sharukhan. Korean people look like Steven yun. See the problem with this thinking. Your insinuating only white people look like white people in global film.

India has several different ethnic groups in its regions. They vastly differ in appearance.

perhaps it's just that the masses spend all their time in the sun doing stuff, eating street noms, and being angry because there are always too many people around and it's always so hot. meanwhile actors are inside practicing singing, getting their choreography tight, being bad at dubbing, (why are almost all indian & chinese movies always dubbed no matter what?) & eating extravagant foodstuffs while laughing lounging in big cool mostly empty rooms on comfy furniture or just cushions. lots and lots of comfortable cushions, that are EVERYWHERE.

In traditional societies, light skin was often associated with upper classes who stay indoors, while dark skin was often associated with working classes who work outdoors. That's one of the reasons for the traditional light-skin bias. But it's outdated. Nowadays, upper and middle classes are more likely to go out on holidays and get tans.
