Mine is AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm Young. Simply put they're Legendary guitar players and AC/DC has some of the Best Guitar riffs of all time. There's so many talented players throughout Rock'n'roll's history. Chuck Berry has also really memorable riffs and I think The Beatles are among the best of all time. Ozzy Osbourne has always had a box of Lucky Charms up his ass when searching for guitar player's.

So GS posters what's some of your favorite guitar player's? Thank you for your replies. ?

@brimmul777: There are so many guitar genres I like. But if I can only choose one guitarist it must be Gary Moore.

So many, but I think I can narrow it down to Dimebag Darrell (RIP) for riffage, Tom Morrello for being outside the box, and Jeff Beck reinventing himself every decade or so.

Hard to choose. For me personally, probably between Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page (before the drugs) or John Frusciante.

The Yardbirds were good, but I meant more the early Zep stuff. I realise he was probably doing drugs back then too, but not to the extent that he was in the later 70's. And then there's the 80's... the Live Aid gig is really hard to watch as a Jimmy Page fan.

Edit: Oh and good choice btw.

While I don't think he's objectively the best, my personal favorite is probably Jack White.

Great choice. Quite possibly the most complete blues guitar player there'll ever be.

I have a soft spot for Yngwie. It's not the scales, it's not the speed, and his songwriting is hit or miss at best; it's his vibrato that's out of this world.

John 5, even though I don't really listen to the bands he's played with or his solo stuff, seems to be the most versatile guitarist right now. He can play just about any style with incredible accuracy, elegance and feeling. I know it may sound like a weird notion, considering that he's best known as "That guy from Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie that plays a Telecaster" but he REALLY is that good.

Also, Brian May has a very special place on my list: I've been playing guitar for more than 20 years and he's still that one guy I can't even come close to mimic.

Tough call. I think Eric Johnson does probably my favorite guitar piece in Cliffs of Dover, but overall he's not my favorite. Santana is up there, Mark Knopfler is up there. I've also been into music lately that's maybe less technically demanding but still pretty complex and unique, so I think I'd have to include artists like Dylan, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and James Taylor in here too.

I know Cobain isn't just strictly a guitar player obviously but the crazy shit he could up with on the fly was remarkable.

@br0kenrabbit:

Speaking of Yardbirds.....my 2nd favorite guitarist behind The Edge is Jeff Beck with The Yardbirds and his first album Truth with his own band featuring Rod Stewart and Ron Wood.....I mean "Shapes of Things" and "Becks Bolero" are magnifico.

This is simply too difficult a question to answer.

I can't come up with half of the shit musicians do. I wonder how some of these riffs came to them, honestly?

For me, I prefer Dio, Ozzy & Chris Cornell as my favorite guitar players.

Edit: Jimi Hendrix is also the best guitar player.

I have tons of favourite players, but if I'm limited to just a single one, I'll go with Jack Black.

While he isn't the most technically skilled guitarist, nor the most talented singer, he is the quintessential rock and roll front man. I love him and Tenacious D.

It's a combination of tons of practice time and listening to other musicians to broaden your own imaginative horizons. Once you know the basic scales and what goes with what everything that follows is just combining them in different ways and adding different flourishes. Some of that comes from experimentation, which comes from practice, and some of it comes from taking other people's ideas and adding a riff on them. Basically, like anything else, it takes a lot of time and dedication, but eventually it just sort of comes to you.

I'm not deep enough in rock knowledge to know who the guitarist are, but really dig the guitar playing from bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down, and Guns'N'Roses.

Jari Maenpaa from Wintersun. He has the perfect balance between sweetness and brutality. His lyrics are decent, too. He's easily the best melodic death metal musician in the world, in my opinion.
