Not comparable...especially since there are really good versions of both and really crappy versions of both. JML897
Pretty much my thoughts as well.

I compare them because they're the two most popular forms of music in our culture.Yeah but look at it this way:
If you give a great guitarist a microphone and ask him to freestyIe without any prior experience he is going to fail miserably.
If you give a great rapper a guitar and ask him to play it, without any prior experience he is going to fail miserably.
Guitar. Easily. I'm not saying that purely because I play guitar and I hate rapping, but it's just true. Although they are hardly comparible.
I don't see how it takes skill to rap, I can rap. I've never practiced before, but I can. If you've learnt to talk and you know all the silly 'street' lingo that people use, you can rap.

I haaaaate this mindset that so many people in OT seem to have. All it does is make you look ignorant.
Please, I'd like to hear you rap and upload it somewhere. It should be hilarious.
Im going to say Guitar playing.
But writing good rap songs im sure is very difficult. Listen to those lyrics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvGiIeaMSAI
compared to crap like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE3yia1AJeQ
People don't really know rap these days which seems to give off a flawed perspective, in addition the beats of most quality numbers aren't computer generated bullcrap. IMO guitar playing requires more skill but it hasn't many talent requirements, as opposed to rapping which does require quite a bit of talent due to the vocals and articulation.
In the end, it's both just really hard but getting succes in general is pretty hard. I do find these 'OMG the guitar is the most difficult intrument to play ever' really tiresome though.

Teehee, I knew I'd get hate reply to that ;)
Thing is, I don't see what's so great about it. I'm not even talking specifically about the 'rapping', but the music in the background is incredibly basic, you could throw a few presets from Logic Studio or Cubase together and have a full backing track for a rap song. To me it seems like a cheap way into the Music Industry. For guitar, drums, bass, synth, or learning to actually sing, it takes years of practice and the outcome is much more musically impressive than that of any rap record.
And what's with the lyrics of most rap songs? There's no meaning behind them and they usually revolve around drugs, sex or violence. So in that sense, I respect Eminem for being one of the only rap artists that have true meaning and well thought out lyrics in his songs, although I still won't listen to it because it's just not my thing.
As my sig says, it's my opinion. I laugh at the thought of Rap music being seen as Talented.

"They said I can't rap about being broke no more
They ain't say I can't rap about coke no more
(AH!) Slut, you think I won't choke no whore
'til the vocal cords don't work in her throat no more?!
(AH!) These motherfvckers are thinking I'm playing
Thinking I'm saying the sh!t cause I'm thinking it just to be saying it
(AH!) Put your hands down b!tch, I ain't gonna shoot you
I'ma pull +YOU+ to this bullet, and put it through you
(AH!) Shut up slut, you're causing too much chaos
Just bend over and take it like a slut, OK Ma?
"Oh, now he's raping his own mother, abusing a whore,
snorting coke, and we gave him the Rolling Stone cover?"
You god damn right B!TCH, and now it's too late
I'm triple platinum and tragedies happen in two states
I invented violence, you vile venomous volatile b!tches
vain Vicadin, vrinnn Vrinnn, VRINNN! [*chainsaw revs up*]
Texas Chainsaw, left his brains all
dangling from his neck, while his head barely hangs on
Blood, guts, guns, cuts
Knives, lives, wives, nuns, sluts"

I'd like to see you list all of his songs my friend. and thanks for ignoring the rest of the message, it means that part must have got through to you
*ahem*
Have you ever loved someone so much, you'd give an arm for?
Not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?
When they know they're your heart
And you know you were their armour
And you will destroy anyone who would try to harm her.
And when I'm gone, just carry on, don't mourn
Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice
Just know that I'm looking down on you smiling
And I didn't feel a thing, So baby don't feel no pain
Just smile back

And other rappers don't have songs with heartfelt lyrics? Even OT's least favorite rapper Kanye West has songs like that.
I think about it like this: The vast majority of rappers are not musicians. They are poets (I use the term loosely). The producer literally writes all / majority of the "music" (again I use the term loosely). Very few would I consider talented.
Guitarists on the other hand are just as varied. There are crappy power chord guitarists, virtuosic guitarists, etc. The producer usually doesn't write the music but definitely contributes to a varying degree beyond mixing the recording.
I woud say guitarists are more talented but there are exceptions.

As far as mainstream rap goes, no.
I don't dig deep enough to find the 'best' most original rap artists out there, because it's not even enjoyable to listen to.
Eminem was never good in the first place, Vanilla Ice> Enimem and they are both just terrible. His popularity never made sense, and I liked how his fanbase ended up splitting with like some black dudes and mostly white duded listening to him and then ost of the black guys are like "THe fuc is this crude?""They said I can't rap about being broke no more

Half or the arguments in here can be summed up as, guitar musicians are better because I honestly don't listen to rap and know nothing about it. Pretty much everyone can play guitar with enough practice, the same can't be said for rapping. So like I said before guitar takes more skill but rapping requires more talent.
[QUOTE="ad1x2"][QUOTE="CHOASXIII"]TC, you should have known better than to ask a question like this in OT when the vast majority of posters here hate rap... This has nothing to do with your reply. But I think Kane don't need that golddigging hoe. He just needs to chokeslam the hell out of her.Definitely guitar musicians.
Hemmaroids
wtf dude
How can you not like AJ?
[QUOTE="Jackc8"]
You've got to be kidding. Playing guitar takes about 10,000 times more skill and talent.
JML897
Being a good rapper is more difficult than being some kid who just learned how to play Wonderwall.
Being able to play guitar is more impressive than speaking fast in my opinion.

I actually didn't mean to quote CHAOSXIII but I was typing on my iPad and thought I hit the quick reply button when I must have hit the quick quote button. I deleted it and retyped the message but you caught me.
Also, AJ messing with Kane is just a storyline anyway and Kane is already married.

Rapping is just speaking really fast isn't it?
I'm sure the rap aficionados and purists will disagree and argue that i'm simplifying it but basically thats what it is.
And i like rap. Older rap anyways.
mastering an instrument takes exponentially more work and skill imo. Rappers are good with showmanship usually but few actually even have anything to do with the music for their songs. Hell even lyrics tend to get ghost writed these days. Thats not to say It takes no talent or skill but im just saying i think someone like Steve vai is generally much more talented and then then most rappers.
Anyway though this has no bearing on the music itself though which is no doubt what this thread is gonna come down to. One music form is better than the other its prefernce and you can enjoy what you want to.

Guitarist vs hip-hop producer would probably be a better comparison. Even then they're pretty different.

It would because they do all of the real work for the most part.
