Having the no one is better than me attitude actually can work very well if you balance it out with those who are actually worth your time.

When it comes to simply having an exchange of ideas (i.e. a discussion), there is nothing more detrimental than having that attitude. It's that very attitude that has thwarted intellectual progress since the beginning of human civilization. It's only when people have been humble enough to consider the very real possibility that our conception of the world is wrong that we've actually made discoveries - not just about the human condition (which's a very limiting perspective) but also about the cosmic condition. There's a great quote from Men in Black (of all things) "1,500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was flat. And 15 minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow." Socrates put it more bluntly, "all I know is that I know nothing."

Well said. To add confidence isn't an inherently bad thing of course. Having enough confidence in your ideas to put them out there to be heard, having enough confidence to approach the girl you like and knowing you're good enough to get the job you want obviously are going to help you. Like anything though there's such a thing as too much of a good thing.

[QUOTE="worlock77"]

[QUOTE="Laihendi"]Ignoring Ron Paul's policies to just call him a racist is an ad hominem attack. You cannot win a debate on the issues to resort to attacking his character (a fallacious attack as well). That is exactly what an ad hominem is. Liberals like you and Jim do not like it when you are called out for using irrational logical fallacies. You want to keep living in your fantasy world where the laws of logical discourse do not apply to you. You have no conception of reality. Please explain to me how it is not an ad hominem attack to try to discredit Ron Paul by calling him a racist. Please explain how it is an ad hominem to call him old to discredit him, but not to call him racist. Stop telling me to stop using terms that YOU do not understand. You are ignorant.Laihendi

The thing is I'm not calling him a racist you dipsh*t. I'm pointing out that the newsletters are a valid criticism. The fact is he published them. They were printed in his publication under his name. If he didn't write them then he allowed for the perception that they were written by him. And ether he knowingly did so, or he was too incompetent to control what has being printed in the pages he was paying for. Whichever way you spin it it does not reflect well on him.

Do not call me a dipshit. I deserve be respected. You liberals think you are so smart because you have a bunch of socialist professors who agree with everything you say but in reality it is you who agree with them because liberals are parrots. You liberals think you are so smart but you are not. You think you are better than me but you are not. No one is better than me. I am intelligent, perceptive, and insightful. You are too ignorant to appreciate my intellect. You are too ignorant to understand the things that I say. You think I am stupid but I am not. You think you are more intelligent than me but you are not. You think that you can understand things that I cannot but you cannot. You cannot understand anything. You live in a fantasy world where insane power hungry megalomaniacs like Obama steal your money and wiretap your phones because he cares. You are brainwashed and you have no understanding of anything. You think you have all of the answers but you do not. You think your ad hominem attacks against Ron Paul are legitimate concerns but they are not.

Fair enough, but we only know you by what you post. And what you post is not particularly insightful; indeed, it is essentially regurgitation of the talkingpoints associated with an overly simplistic worldview. For some reason, you seem to think you are posting deep and original thought but I for one have heard exactly the same points hundreds if not thousands of times over quite a few decades. Unfortunately, the view many of us have of you is further reinforced by your seeming lack of real world experience. Perhaps you should start respecting what other people bring to the table; in this way you might earn some yourself. And Ron Paul definitely is an honest stand up guy who speaks some kernels of truth, but like any fanatic or idealogue he is immune to anything other than his views, which makes him extremely dangerous in the complex shades of grey world we actually live in.

If anything I'd guess he's actually got some issues with self confidence which he over-compensates for by acting as arrogant as possible. But that's just speculation on my part. Maybe he really is an insufferably arrogant douchenozzle with an over-inflated, but groundless, ego.

Can you post some examples? It certainly isn't common. And that isn't even the main point I was trying to make....Im saying that if he was indeed racist, then he would support the drug war. Thats all.

Dennis Kucinich, Barney Frank, John Conyers, Barbara Lee, Jared Polis, and Steve Cohen all co-sponsored legislation with Ron Paul that would've ended the drug war (legislation that was the first of its kind). And in terms of prominence, both Jimmy Carter and more recently Bill Clinton have come out and have campaigned against the drug war.

And in terms of Ron Paul being racist or not - I don't care one way or another what he personally believes. His ideology, however, is very attractive to racists and that's something that Ron Paul has to realize - there's just no way that he, as a politician, doesn't. He's pandered to racists at various points in his political career. He published the now infamous newsletters under his own name and has given speeches in front of the confederate flag talking about how the South was in the right during the Civil War. And maybe that's not Ron Paul fault specifically ("don't hate the player, hate the game") but when I judge a political movement I'm not someone who really cares about the personal beliefs of a "leader" of  that movement, what I care about is the collective political beliefs of the movement as a whole, who is this person representing, because Ron Paul's just one person and there's never anything partiularly special about just one person. But if you're going to conflate Ron Paul the person with "the libertarian movement", by definition it would seem as though you would have to associate Ron Paul with the more disgusting elements of American libertarianism. If you don't want people to do that then don't romanticize the man - don't make him more than he actually is.

No, that's not confidence. It's arrogance, and there is a very clear difference between the two.

Confidence allows one to voice their opinions and contribute because they know that they can bring some knowledge or skills to the table. Arrogance prevents one from listening to and considering the input of others and crowding out the skills those others bring to the table because, "Damn it, I'm right and I'm the best."

Frankly, in my experience an arrogant individual is more detrimental to the progress of a group than a timid one. It's easier to either work around a timid individual or build up their confidence to where they feel comfortable contributing more than it is to get an arrogant individual to accept that they may be wrong or that someone else may have a better idea or skillset than they do for a particular situation.
