When it comes to simply having an exchange of ideas (i.e. a discussion), there is nothing more detrimental than having that attitude. It's that very attitude that has thwarted intellectual progress since the beginning of human civilization. It's only when people have been humble enough to consider the very real possibility that our conception of the world is wrong that we've actually made discoveries - not just about the human condition (which's a very limiting perspective) but also about the cosmic condition. The thing is I'm not calling him a racist you dipsh*t. I'm pointing out that the newsletters are a valid criticism. The fact is he published them. They were printed in his publication under his name. If he didn't write them then he allowed for the perception that they were written by him. And ether he knowingly did so, or he was too incompetent to control what has being printed in the pages he was paying for. Whichever way you spin it it does not reflect well on him.

And Ron Paul definitely is an honest stand up guy who speaks some kernels of truth, but like any fanatic or idealogue he is immune to anything other than his views, which makes him extremely dangerous in the complex shades of grey world we actually live in.

If anything I'd guess he's actually got some issues with self confidence which he over-compensates for by acting as arrogant as possible. But that's just speculation on my part. Maybe he really is an insufferably arrogant douchenozzle with an over-inflated, but groundless, ego.

And in terms of Ron Paul being racist or not - I don't care one way or another what he personally believes. His ideology, however, is very attractive to racists and that's something that Ron Paul has to realize - there's just no way that he, as a politician, doesn't. He's pandered to racists at various points in his political career. He published the now infamous newsletters under his own name and has given speeches in front of the confederate flag talking about how the South was in the right during the Civil War. And maybe that's not Ron Paul fault specifically ("don't hate the player, hate the game") but when I judge a political movement I'm not someone who really cares about the personal beliefs of a "leader" of  that movement, what I care about is the collective political beliefs of the movement as a whole, who is this person representing, because Ron Paul's just one person and there's never anything partiularly special about just one person. But if you're going to conflate Ron Paul the person with "the libertarian movement", by definition it would seem as though you would have to associate Ron Paul with the more disgusting elements of American libertarianism. If you don't want people to do that then don't romanticize the man - don't make him more than he actually is.

I'm also surprised how nobody mentioned how he opposed a cure to a certain form of cancer when one was found.

I love that he actually talks about how much corporations are into the government. Bill Burr loves him too, but that might not be a good thing. Bill's kinda crazy.
