The world has gone to pot with racism. The latest is the Dove add on UK TV. Its a 30 second add with different race women. This is not as rude as it sounds. Like I said its 30 seconds long with different race women taking off there top turning into different race. One is where a black women takes her top off and turns into a White women and now this add is classed as racist. Dove has actually had to apologize for being racist but its ok for a white person to turn into a Asian and other people turning into a other race?.

Haha..yea I found it pretty dumb they are calling it racist..just means all skin type...people will find anything to offended nowadays, makes it seem like black people have a constant chip on their shoulder...shame Dove didn't stand their ground. That black or white Michael Jackson video must also be racist too.. lol.. :P

You can't say or do anything at all to a black person today or there will be accusations of racism.Sick of hearing that excuse.

The word racism has been flung around so much, it has lost all meaning.

The ad doesn't seem like it was intended to be racist, but Dove (like any company) has to remember context and how certain imagery might have been used in the past. For example, the idea of painting one's face darker than one's actual skin tone isn't inherently racist, but in the cultural context of the US that has been used in -extremely- racist ways (minstrel shows) in the history of entertainment so it's going to carry a bad stigma for a long, long time.

The image of a black woman in dark clothing changing to a white woman in light clothing in an ad for a personal cleanser can be (and has in the past been) used to imply that the prior is the "dirty" version of the "clean" woman. Now I don't think that's even remotely what they intended, but that's an old "joke" that used to appear in really racist comic strips and other medium. Here's a Chinese commercial from not that long ago that absolutely -was- going for the racist implication that the black guy is the "dirty" version:

Loading Video...

So while that's not what Dove was trying to do, it's too close to some imagery and intent that has been done in the past that's obviously really, really was racist and that's the problem.

I'm getting sick & tired of people can't leave someone else alone. Who cares? Let that person be somebody he/she ain't. You wanna be White, Black, Asian, into same-sex, whatever, that's your business, not me to judge.

I really don't wanna live on this planet anymore!

Haven't you been paying attention? Everything is racist, you pointing this out as not being racist is also clearly racist....

It's probably also misogynistic somehow too.

I mean, I get it, they should know better. But they didn't mean it (allegedly), so maybe stop flipping the hell out. At least don't be so pissed. Sure they naive or ignorant, but I wouldn't say they're bad.

Skin-bleaching products are quite common in developing countries, especially in Africa and South/Southeast Asia.

@skipper847: how is this racist? This is a product people ask for this is what the product does Just like you promote a tanning product. I am sorry I just do not get it.

Having a fairer skin is pretty common and has nothing to do with racism...

@Byshop: That. That's the kind of lawyer logic which drives people crazy.

"So while that's not what Dove was trying to do, it's too close to some imagery and intent that has been done in the past that's obviously really, really was racist and that's the problem."

No one else was thinking that when they saw this commercial. The only people who think it's a problem are people who are hyper-aware and just a tinge too sensitive to it and who, in turn, make it a problem.

Is it October again?

The clip was taken out of context which made it looks worse. That's what exacerbated this whole thing.

The black woman was still there, but they just cut the controversial part (the changing race part).

Ok someone might've already said this but no way I'm reading all the comments so

The whole controversy wasn't that the race changed per se, it's that it went from black to white. People were trying to say that it implies that black people are dirty and white people are clean since it's a cleaning product.

Not saying I agree that it's racist though, I think that's ridiculous.

@skipper847: You're taking this completely out of context. Dove released a tiny snippet on Twitter, which showed the white woman turning into a black woman, so in that way, it could have been taken in the wrong light, especially following on from the chinese advert.
