BEST: 70's and 80's.
WORST: Present.
Well?
I don't think there is really a "worse" era regarding music. Only differing degrees of greatness.
Personally my favorite era is the 70s. The soul/harmony/funk/disco era followed closely by the 80s.
Love the 50s-60s as well with great great melodies and lyrics. Real catchy stuff. I still have songs from members of the Rat Pack, Spinners, Chuck Berry, etc. on my play list.
Best: 1960's (Beatles, best Stones, Hendrix, Traffic, Velvet Underground, Love, best Kinks, Dylan, Zeppelins first 2 albums, The Doors, Byrds, Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes, etc. etc. etc. )
Worst: This Decade (uh One Direction)
It must be noted that the 1970's was the best era for soul music by far, also had the revolutionary punk movement and New York New Wave in the latter half of the decade.
The 1980's was the best era for underground, college radio, thrash, and experimental alternative music that came to the fore in the early 1990's. Ever hear of Echo and the Bunnymen,The Cocteau Twins, and The Pixies? A lot of light but fun pop music in the 1980's also, and if you actually liked hair bands this was your decade.
@sayyy-gaa:
I didn't mention Elvis because I still consider his best stuff in the 50's, but yeah he made a comeback of sorts. I forgot to mention the Beach Boys as well....Good Vibrations is still one of the great pop singles of the 1960's.
Haha the Rat Pack, well heh Sinatra was in the group so that's a big plus, thought they were more 50's though.
My favourite is the '80s because of my love of heavy metal with many of my favourite bands such as Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dio, etc.
@AFBrat77: Yeah I would definitely put Ozzy in there as well, awesome stuff with Diary, Blizzard, Bark at the Moon. Yeah Sabbath was great in the '70s as well but I really loved the stuff with Ronnie in the band too.
For me currently these new rappers trash...my favorite period was the dipset,g-unit,wayne,boosie,jeezy era..so basically 00-09
Best: 90s
Worst: Present
+1
I would define "Present" to be 2000-present.
My favorites would have to be: Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Keane, Interpol, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue. Not to mention the peak of rap: Eazy-e, 2pac, Eminem, Warren g, BIG etc.
What a time to be alive. Scary too.
There's loads of shit these days with music, but also plenty of really great lesser known artists that rival the classics in their own way. At least, that's how I view it.
till 2000 everything was a pleasant successor of the previous era. after 2000 the whole world mutated and became like a tumor; ugly, deformed and growing. that includes music, politics, cinema, etc.
I think music as a whole has gotten way more diverse and interesting over time
I agree with this.
With the advent of stuff like Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc. there is SO MUCH music out there + we have unparalleled access to older generations.
As for the worst era? That question is dumb as hell lol not going to indulge such stupidity.

My thoughts exactly :(
Music has gotten better you just need to look harder. That's the problem we are just barraged with so so so much crap we are just convinced that's all there is, man, but there is so much good amazing stuff out there! It's incredible the talent out there.
You tell people you know a guy that put's Jimi Hendrix to shame and they say "bullshit" before even listening to him or a trumpet player that rivals the best of any of the jazz greats and they go "impossible" and you wonder if they're even open to the notion of good music even being able to exist any more. And if that is the case, why even bother convincing them? That's a sad world to live in, man.

thank christ, another optimist. Was beginning to think this entire site stooped to cynicism.

I'm "old" as well at 32; I've never even listened to Beiber, Gaga, or Lil Wayne...not willingly, at least. I don't even listen to the radio any more (thank god for XM radio).
It makes it difficult to relate to people sometimes because they'll quote them or start singing or say something and I'll be like "WTF is that" or like "Sip'n on Sizzurp? What's 'sizzurp?'" but whatever.
Hold out, brother, you can do it.
AS someone said go get on Spotify and go on a journey down a magical musical rabbit hole.

I am not a huge fan of today's music but remember today's musicians are inspired by their forefather. I LOVE Pink. I kind of like Justin Timberlake too. I mean they all riff off of what came before. Timberlake is a modern day Frank Sinatra/Michael Jackson hybrid(with FAR less talent). Ditto for Usher and Michael Jackson. Music today seems more derivative because it is but it can still be good.
A big reason why the modern era gets criticized so much, like with any entertainment medium, is because the older eras had more creativity and originality to them. The '50s and '60s had the rock revolution. The '70s had the disco revolution. The '80s had the electronic revolution. And the '90s had the hip hop revolution. Since the 2000s, there hasn't been anything comparable to the musical revolutions of the '50s to the '90s.

Disco? Very short lifespan and denegrated at the time.

You're looking way too much into it. The big reason why the modern era gets criticized is simple: the ones bashing it don't actually know shit about modern music. Look at this thread as a nice example of what I mean: the artists people mention are the most mainstream of mainstream acts like Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, One Direction, etc yet use examples from past eras of bands that weren't even famous in their own eras like Velvet Underground or Pixies.
@LJS9502_basic:
Yeah, he should have said the 70's had the punk revolution, disco was a step back and died in 5 years.
-50's had the rock and roll revolution
-60's had the Rock revolution and a ton of new subgenres under it
-70's had the punk movement (though a sub genre of rock)
- 80's had the college rock/alternative movement and the rap scene was in full swing.
Not a fan of those reality tv show singers. I guess that counts as now?
Music wise, I like stuff like The Verve, so the 90's I suppose.
@perfect_blue:
This is a thinly veiled swipe at my initial post. It doesn't matter that the Velvet Underground wasn't appreciated until a decade after the 60's, they were ahead of their time and out of step with other bands at the time, but their music was largely created IN THE 60's. The Pixies were popular with those of us who followed alternative in the 80's.
I was kidding with One Direction, but the 60's is far better than this decade for music. FAR better, I merely scratched the surface with what the 60's offered.
