To me the movie was a lot of light fun.....just the way I like my Star Wars, and I've been there since the beginning. I'll probably see it 3 times overall.
I think it's better (albeit less original) than A New Hope. But I would be disappointed if the next movie tries to do similar with Empire Strikes Back. But I'm familiar with the next director and seriously doubt he would do that.
Here's the thing: this is in the hands of Disney now. Guaranteed that this is gonna get handled exactly like those Marvel movies. And one of the defining traits of those Marvel movies is that the directors and writers are largely just hired to do what they're told.
I'm not saying that there's no room for personal vision, but generally speaking these are NOT movies for artists and writers to show their personal vision. The writers and directors are mostly there to do what they're told. Why else do you think that arguably the best Marvel movie (Captain America 2) was directed by two guys who pretty much had done TV work up to that point? Why were they given the reigns to a 170 million dollar movie when they've never directed a feature length theatrical film before, and certainly have never directed a 100+ million dollar blockbuster?
Guaranteed that the Star Wars franchise from this point forward is going to fit right into that mold. Disney WANTS safe, that's why they hired JJ Abrams. They didn't spend over 4 BILLION dollars on this franchise just to piss it away by letting "artists" ruin it with their personal vision. That's in large part what led to Star Wars getting "ruined" in the first place. Make no mistake, they're gonna run this thing like a machine, EXACTLY how they do with the Marvel movies. There is zero room here for rocking the boat or letting an "artist" tarnish the franchise with their "personal vision". I'm sure Rian Johnson will do a fine job, but I'm also sure that he's gonna do exactly what Disney tells him to do. I'm confident that he deliver "competent" and "safe", but THAT'S why he's getting hired.
That's of course not to say that the movies won't be entertaining. I'm sure they will be, just like the Marvel movies are entertaining. But "Rian Johnson wouldn't do that?" He's gonna do what he's told. These are movies by-committee with executives calling the shots. These movies are not in the vein of something like Brick or Looper. And given the Marvel movies' tendency to be extremely formulaic, I'm not expecting anything else from Star Wars. If appealing to nostalgia is the corporate mandate in order to remove the stink of the prequels, that's EXACTLY what'll keep happening.
