We all know we can't sustain the kind of lifestyle the first-world is used to at the moment, simply due to lack of natural resources. Even if we do manage to find a source of renewable water, energy, etc, a cataclysmic environmental event, or a man-made error, will almost certainly bring society as we know it to an end.

So, what do you think it will be? Personally, I think that the lack of water is going to hit us incredibly hard in the next 20 or so years, and that many will die off, effectively ending our current society (and perhaps giving life to more nomadic type wanderers).

What are your thoughts?

The only truly sustainable form of society is that of tribal hunting and gathering. Everything else takes more to sustain than what can be produced at any one time. I've been thinking about this a lot over the years... a catastrophic cultural collapse is most likely going to take place if we cannot find a way to produce more energy and food than what humanity as a whole consumes on a daily basis. Though, nuclear fusion will definitely help. Even still... at least 1/3 of the planet goes hungry every single day.

We'll get screwed over by a natural disaster.

This is a tough one, but I agree with you. Not just water though, I think natural resources in general will reducedramatically, which will also lead to war. I think it will breed more self sufficient societies, and possibly nomadic type people as you had said. Honestly, I kind of hope it happens...but...NO MORE OT!!! Gaaaahhhhh :| :( :?
