I'm on episode 10, so far it's just been a really good mecha series. Without giving anything away, at what time does it get mindskrewy?

Understatement? =PThe last few episodes are a little weird. I thought so anyway.
Same with Berserk.

Episode 14 has the first mind-trip, but the real turning point is episode 16. From there on it gets progressively darker and darker.

I should mention that the last two episodes take place completely in the minds of the characters. I personally loved it and found the psychological depth of it to be genius, plus it's very unique and not something you see much of in anime but many people hated it cause it didn't really conclude the story well. But there's always End of Evangelion for that, which is awesome as well. If you know what to expect going into the last two episodes and if you love the characters, you shouldn't hate it so much.
End of Evangelion was terrible. What's with the first scene? :|I should mention that the last two episodes take place completely in the minds of the characters. Yeah, the first scene was...a little disturbing to put it mildly. It doesn't make it terrible though. Not sure if I can completely discuss it without bringing in spoilers, but I think it just goes to show how desperate Shinji was for somebody to be there for him. If you think about all he just went through up to that point, it makes sense that he'd be pretty depressed and with no one else to turn to, it was like his only way to feel any sort of 'connection' with her. But yeah, very desperate and messed up. At least he can acknowledge that what he did was wrong. Of course, it's also completely possible that Hideaki Anno put it in there as a response to all the hate mail he received, kind of as a way to piss off the fans.
Its starts getting dark and strange around episode 16 and just gets darker and stranger till the final episodes and the End of Evangelion, where it just feels a bit messed up and all. I think dpgunit_3087 explained it perfectly.
Oh and this is for Evilrobot19:
That's why I love NGE.Yeah, I watched episode 16, now it's gone from awesome mecha to awesome wierdness!
Mr_Versipellis
I guess it makes sense now. But when I first saw it, I was like "O_O WTF". :P The real reason I didn't like EoE was because I liked the original series ending better (EoE was an alt. ending to NGE IIRC).Yeah, the first scene was...a little disturbing to put it mildly. Mr_Versipellis: Yep, and it's only going to get weirder and creepier. I want to see your reaction after watching episode 19, lol.
ghoklebutter: *SPOILERS for Mr_Versipellis, do not read* I actually researched the meaning behind that scene after I tried to describe it, and I don't think a connection with her was a good way to explain it now, lol. But it's still partially true cause later on in the movie she mentions how she knows about his fantasies about her (Shinji could be imagining this scene, not 100% sure, but it's likely), and Shinji obviously likes her, so he was just reacting on his lust for her. He could only connect with her in his fantasies since she was unconscious. Besides, he's a 14 year old boy going through puberty, lol. But a better explanation I found is that Shinji is obviously extremely afraid of rejection, and when Asuka is lying there unconscious, there's absolutely no way she can reject him. So since he can't be rejected he gives into pressure and, being his age, does what he does.
