Music really isn't a competition but among those I find Chuck Berry the most innovative artist, he is like the root of Rock n' Roll.

My personal favourite is Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers however.

Buddy Holly as well. Chuck Berry is a close 2nd.

But I must say, your inclusion of post-Beatles band The Zombies is puzzling.

I'd put The Beach Boys up there before The Zombies, although the Beach Boys (which were greatly influenced by Chuck Berry) were not a major impact on rock and roll (actually Rock at that point) until the release of Pet Sounds.

I voted Elvis he had some good music when he was young. Some of his older stuff is okay but I'm not a huge fan of it.

Your right,I should have added the Beach Boys.I should have also added The Beatles.I don't know why,but I forget sometimes The Beatles ain't really modern.There music is so timeless.By the way,in case no one knew,The Beatles are majorly influenced by Buddy Holly.

@brimmul777:

No, you were right in not including The Beatles, including the British Invasion, although their pre-Help stuff (even some of the album Help) was rock and roll/pop, The Beatles and other British Invasion don't belong on this poll which is largely 1955 - 1963 rock and roll, the bands that set up the British wave in 1964.

Sorry for the run-on sentence.

And yeah The Beatles and the British Invasion were influenced a lot by those others on the list, John Lennon even said, no Presley, no Beatles.

@davillain-:

I know some of you guys are young and don't realize the separation between the bands listed as opposed to The Beatles and Stones, but trust me those 2 bands do not belong on THIS particular list.

They are part of the next wave.

Oh I see. The only person I'm familiar is really just Elvis Presley so I'll just vote on him.

He was a blues musician who had a tremendous influence on many 60s/70s rock bands. He recorded with some of them too, like with the blues rock band Canned Heat. I think if you have artists like the Drifters on there, you could also include JLH.

A lot of those artists I wouldn't really classify as rock n' roll. Your post should read, 'What Oldies artists were the best in your opinion?"

I understand what your saying,but those artists are indeed the start of Rock'N'Roll.Bands in the 60's,70's,etc... are too considered Rock'N'Roll as well. Just curious,what bands/artists do you consider not Rock'N'Roll.By the way,the term "Rock'N'Roll" has been used 60+years and will probably be used for another 60 years.

@brimmul777:

Agreed your list is mostly accurate of the original rock and roll bands, a craze that began 60 years ago with Bill Haley's "Rock around the Clock" in 1955.

It was a cultural phenomenon because it represented the true beginning of teenagers as a separate group and their rebellion of adult authority, although adults tended to write off rock and roll as a short-lived fad. The 12 -14 year olds in 1955 who took to Rock and Roll were the vanguard of the Baby Boomer generation, and Rock and Roll would transition into Rock by the mid-60's.
