A Shakespeare novel is considered a masterpiece because it appeals to all of the human emotions with its complex and interesting characters that

have such universal appeal that they stood the test of time, far greater than any other collection of books has ever.

But this is all based on what Society deems a character "Great."

A romance story would be considered good if it appealed to everyone's experiences in love. But what if we were in a different reality where

Love is an entirely different story.Hell, what if love doesn't exist

If you put that romance story in that dimension, hell, it won't be popular or considered good because it doesn't appeal to the masses of that dimension.

So if criticism and quality are based off of human experiences and society and what not, and if the rules of society are not tangible, rather, made up and are constantly changing.

Isn't it safe to say that there is no such thing as good or bad work? Merely what society approves is good work?

A prime example of this.

Lord of the rings was considered a bad book by many critics at the time, yet years later, it boomed in popularity. Why? Well, As Bob Dylan once said.

"Times are a changing."

I think 'art' sucks, but if I had to classify who's an "Artist" it would be anyone who's comparable to a common Renascence man during the Italian renaissance.

Shakespeare didn't write novels. This thread is stupid.

A work of art is just a physical piece of someone's self expression. It's not some convoluted thing that needs a huge debate.

Sorry, I meant PLAYS. But what makes one person's self expression better than another's self expression. And yes it does. Especially if you've ever heard of JACKSON pollock

Well the word "art" has nothing to do with the quality of the overall piece. And a lot of that is pretty subjective when you talk about "better" so that's pointless to discuss.

I know how Jackson Pollock is and I don't like his work.

Which is why I believe being called an 'artist' now-uh-days is played out.

What I'm asking here, really. What is the boundary between Justin Bieber and the Beatles

Everything is art. I think Kanye West's album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is an amazing works of art. Others might listen to it and think it's garbage. Everything is art and how good it is, is subjective.

I would like to think of art as visual arts and 3d art (sculpting, computer generated art), etc. All of this "music is art" is what's making being called an artist played out. Music is music, art is art.

I would say a work of art is just simply an artist's creation. You are assuming all works of art are only those pieces deemed "great".
