I guess Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker was pretty good too.

Either full metal jacket or saving private ryan.
Edit: and whoever said Tears of the sun...good call.

Black Hawk Down, Hurt Locker, Jarhead.

Yeah, I've only really seen one's based on modern warfare.

I'd have to say Blackhawk Down just because the pace is great. I love Saving Pvt Ryan; the intro and ending was great, but the in between was so slow. Band of Brothers was also a phenominal series and i wish i watched it all the way through. But from what i've seen it was great. I miss how WW2 movies were done with in the 90's, now its all future modern stuff. I know it's been beaten to death but still.

Impossible to narrow down to just one, so here are my favorites;

Zulu Dawn

We Were Soldiers and Tears of the Sun.

Then Saving Private Ryan, The Pianist, City of Life and Death, and Schindler's List in that order.

One of my favourite films and I can't praise it enough, but in terms of "war movie", I'm a little conflicted. It's as much a war movie as The New World is about portraying the history of Pocahontas accurately--in which, it isn't (though I really like The New World as well). If just taking place in a war counts, then I'm right there with you.

Though not quite conventional, one that's really stuck with me for the past few years:

Battle of Algiers (1966)

Otherwise I'm pretty partial to Band of Brothers, criticisms against Stephen E. Ambrose aside.

Saving Private Ryan, but Apocalypse Now is also damn good, and I did like THe Hurt Locker despite a few inconsistincies.

Ahh, haha. Yeah, it's something. When I was thirteen I made the mistake of watching Private Ryan right before I watched TTRL and as a result, I was really put off of Malick for years. But after gaining an appreciation for auteurism and especially his style (his philosophical/spiritual musings in particular), I re-watched TTRL and now I think it's just so damn special and good. IMO it's one of those movies you just have to grow up to really like.

You do realize that Band of Brothers isn't a movie, right?

My picks would be Apocalypse Now and The Thin Red Line. Fires on the Plain would be my absolute favorite, but I'm not sure how loose of a definition "war film" has.

For me it would probably be Apocalypse Now. There are so many amazing war movies though it is hard to pick.
