Yes I will agree that we are one of the fattest nations out there but I find it very funny that even with us being so obese that we still manage to kick almost everyones ass during the olympics. Here is the link to the table of the 2008 olympics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics_medal_table We are 2nd when it comes to having the most gold medals but we received more overall

310 million people, a third are fat, that still leaves a population greater than almost every other country in the world.

Because it's the obese people that are participating in the olympics...

My point is that yes we are an obese nation but at the same time it seems as if we tend to be more athletic

How did you come to that conclusion? I'd say because you are an obese nation, that would mean you are far less athletic.

Wat, how are the Olympics a representation of the U.S. as a whole? Of course in a nation of 300m, even if 90% of people were morbidly obese, you'd still have millions of people left over who aren't, million(s) is not a small number.

Statistically, an American is more likely to be obese, but our athletes aren't a standard representation, they're the 'best of the best'.

A handful of people are good at sports - let's throw all our health concerns out the window.

I agree. One Olympic-caliber athlete should cancel out at least four, if not five, obese citizens because these things work that way and have a correlation.

The word fat is highly subjective. While we have a lot of people overweight, many people who are overweight are not fat. BMI which is used quite often does not take a person's lifestyle, fitness, or muscle into account.

There's not much irony. Since there are so many people living in the US it's not that everyone is fat. It's a third, or whatever the statistic says. That leaves two third of a population which isn't fat. Two third of the US population is still quite a lot. There could be some serious athletes out there. What I find weirder is that Jamaica has won about 55 medals since 1948, with a population less than three million.

It's not ironic. The USA funds their Olympians better than most other countries. They have access to better training facilities and trainers.
