Unfortunately I'm with Sprint at the moment and they are absolutely horrible. Plus my phone has a broken microphone at the moment so even more trouble. I know T-Mobile's service isn't any better than sprint but their customer oriented attitude is really enticing me. I'd get a new phone and have my ETF paid by t-mobile. I'm very much tempted to make the switch.
Telus. I was fucked over by Rogers too many times and MTS is just laughable despite having a near-monopoly on towers.
Joke's on them though, the Canadian government is trying to pass legislation to let all cellphone providers access to all network's towers across the country without crazy roaming charges. Which means Telus is only going to get a better network in time. That, and they have outstanding transparency and customer service.
T-Mobile. Switched from Verizon a few months ago when I wanted a Note 3 and Verizon did something to really tick me off, so I sold my N2, used it to pay my ETF, and am now on TMO with Jump.
AT&T. About $115 a month for the 5GB data pro plan with tethering on my iPhone 5 (after discount). Thought about switching to T-Mobile but their service is pretty slow around here, and I can't put up with slow.
Believe it or not, I'm 35, work in IT and have never had a cell phone. You wouldn't believe how much money I've saved over the last decade by not paying for a monthly cell contract. It's probably well over 10k.

I believe you. If i had my way, i would have done the same. Then again, if your stranded on a freeway, and your car breaks down, yours screwed, lol ..
I ended up switching to T-Mobile and have not been disappointed. They blow Sprint's service out of the water.

I've never had a break-down, but I've been in a pair of accidents in the last 10 years where my vehicle was totaled. Luckily nobody was hurt in either accident. In both accidents, I either used the other party's phone or the responding police officer's to contact someone.
There are maybe 3 or 4 times a year when it would be really nice to have one (needing directions, need to contact someone urgently and am not around a phone, etc), but those rare occasions aren't worth the $50+ a month for a contract.
Currently on my Fathers AT&T Family plan. It's pretty ridiciulous though, I think we pay around $250 a month for 5 Smartphones with Rollover Minutes, unlimited texting, and 200MB each for 3 lines, and 300MB for the other two.
