Whatever the case may be, whether Lucas did sequels or prequels within a reasonable time after Jedi, they would have been better than the garbage we received. Never did I think I would enjoy Rogue One much more than TFA. Maybe seeing three iconic characters well past their prime (as far as SW characters are concerned) is what did it in for me.
Depends.
ANH was the perfect example of creativity from diversity. It was made by a bunch of young, creative people starting their careers who all had a say and their creativity was allowed to thrive and grow.
ESB and ROTJ, Lucas himself had next to nothing to do with. He was the producer, which pretty much made him the paperwork, hiring and scheduling guy. As far as any creative elements or filming, he was not involved at all. He didnt write anything, he didnt direct anything, he didnt edit anything, etc. In fact he spent most of his time building up THX and ILM, as im sure he felt this was where the real money was at. But at the end of the day it was a similar situation to ANH but people have now grown and they brought in a new promising screenwriter was brought in (Kasdan). As a result, with all three movies magic ensued.
Then came the mess that was the prequel trilogy, a trilogy that ill mention again, i have attempted to outline and i cannot find a way to properly do it in less than six episodes as it was supposed to show the rise of a great jedi and then his fall to the dark side, with a decade long war going on as well. That said the real problem was George Lucas is very sensitive (and i suspect egotistical given it seems he wants full credit for SW) and when people said he didn't do a whole lot with the OT, he decided that he would do everything with the PT and he would prove everyone wrong by producing, writing and directing these fantastic movies (in his head). This is when TPM came out and the claims that he was a bad writer and bad director, were verified to the world and to himself. Because of his sensitivity he decided to ignore the people saying he needs to hand it over for episodes 2 and 3, and instead once again attempted to prove people wrong and instead he once again proved those people right, except it was a far larger base of people now saying this since ep. 1 had come out.
Aaaannndddd there we go, that's why the PT was trash. Because Lucas felt he could do everything all on his own when he was a fairly poor writer and director when he did it regularly as a younger man. But by the time he started the PT, he had not written or directed anything for decades and was far lazier than he was before.
As a little side story that i feel really sums up GL and how the PT went. There is a video on youtube of two ex-LF employee's who worked on TCW. They tell this story of an incident where they were at a meeting with Lucas and like a dozen other people going over the story board and details and one of them pointed out that something GL wanted to do contradicted the original trilogy. The second person verified this and they came up with an idea of how to fix it. They went into detail about how GL just stared at them and no one else would say anything, but then Lucas acknowledged it and moved on like it was nothing and they went about the day like it was any other day. The next morning they get to work and neither of their ID swipe cards work because they were fired overnight.
