NEW YORK (AP) — About 4 in 10 American adults are obese, and nearly 1 in 10 is severely so, government researchers said Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention findings come from a 2017-18 health survey that measures height and weight. More than 5,000 U.S. adults took part.

The survey found that the obesity rate was 42% — higher than the 40% found in a similar 2015-16 study. The severe obesity rate was more than 9% in the new survey, up from the 8% figure in the previous one.

I guess other countries would have been higher if fast-food was as cheap as the United States? I was shocked to see how inexpensive food was South of Border, Canada is pretty darn expensive.

Fast food doesn't make you fat. Sitting on your ass makes you fat.

If I hadn't just left Wal-Mart I would have called BS, but yeah now I think that number is low.

This is a BMI of above 30. Plenty of fat folks with BMI between 25 and 30.

The sample is too small, just 5,000 people out of 330 million?

Nope, a sample of 1,000 would do if the sampling is randomly selected. They got 5 times that, sample was robust.

Yes, I believe so too. The difference in price between fast food and a restaurant which serves food which is at least a bit "healthier" is not very large in my country and we're considered "healthy" (but tbh, I think most citizens here have TERRIBLE stamina and coordination 😄).

IMO people don't really care about the numbers themselves but rather the price difference when they compare "unhealthy but it'll fill me up" versus "not total junk and it'll fill me up" for example. That's what makes a person turn to fast food instead of attempting to explore dishes that could taste good and should be fairly good for you.

Another problem (if you'd like to say so) the U.S has is that it's pretty difficult to find decent restaurants that are not fast food joints.

So in the end it seems like it all adds up to this, not surprising in any kind of way 🤨

Ok, Americans are fat. I see it every day and it's sickening to be honest, but "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention findings come from a 2017-18 health survey that measures height and weight."

I'd hope they used more than this to determine obesity.

I'm not talking overeating, though. I'm talking just fast food. In 2017, I lost 63 pounds because I cut down on how much I ate and added exercise to my daily routines. I still hit up fast food restaurants at least three times a week. The very act of eating fast food is not the sole contributor to making one fat. It's how much you eat and how little you exercise. Anyone can work off the calories they consume. Some have to work harder than others, yes, but it's a simple matter of math. Eat more calories than you burn = fat.

Negative. Diet is way more influential on your physique than exercise.

Not proud to be one of those obese people.

If you have friends who are fat, help them out (be nice about it, though), and if you know people who are getting fat, tell them.

Usually there is some sort of psychological issue and they turn to food just like someone might turn to drugs, alcohol, or tobacco.

Pretty sure Mexico is the second most obese, and Australia after that.

Or are you Canadian and you mean the US is south of the border haha

Diet is about 80% of it.

Exercise is more of a boost or an aid, but at the end of the day if you're running 5 miles but eating 3000 Cal, you're going to still put on weight.

@sonicare: I'm sorry, hope I didn't come across as picking on the U.S? I love our Southern Friends. I know the world has weight problems as well in most countries. I think Japan has one of the lowest obesity issues in developed countries, sure I seen that online before? Not sure?

@kadin_kai:

That's an adequate sample size, in fact that's about as high as you want to go.

Any more than that your survey becomes a waste of money, as you won't get vastly different results. You will notice patterns and data repeating.

I've done professional survey's before

True, but what I'm saying is that if you only get up and do shit, you will burn what you eat. It doesn't matter if all you eat is salads or hamburgers. If you aren't MOVING, you're storing calories.
