Australian bride-to-be shot dead by US police after 911 call

According to Australian media, the 40-year old woman was living in Minneapolis with her fiancé. The woman called 911 to report a noise near her home when the incident occurred, reports said.

Ms Damond, dressed in her pyjamas, reportedly approached the driver's side door and was talking to the officer at the wheel after the police arrived, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported, citing three sources with knowledge of the incident.

The officer in the passenger seat, identified by local media as Mohamed Noor, reportedly drew his gun and shot Ms Damond through the driver's window, the newspaper reported.

We really need some kind of police training reform.

Sad all around. That cop should not be a cop.

She wasn't black, though. What was the cop thinking? Basic training, indeed.

Not going to say what I really think... don't want the pro-gun nuts getting their panties in a twist.

But extremely sad and unnecessary.

Is there more to the story? Was it an accident? Was she acting angry towards the officers?

This doesn't make any sense. The woman was talking to the police through the drivers side window, the passenger cop drew his firearm and fired past his partner and through his window?

Yeah this is fucked up, to say the least. You should not call the police to help you only to get shot and killed by them [I'm assuming] accidentally, something is incredibly wrong with that picture.

I was reading about it today, they're being incredibly tight-lipped about it. This cop was apologetic, said being a cop was "a calling" to him (ugh, gross) and he was sorry. I also read that there were "multiple investigations pending"...multiple?! Into what? This one cop? This one tragic accident?

If I was this family, I'd hire an army of lawyers, get an outside force (state law, FBI, some sort of federal thing...SOMETHING) in there before the local boys cover this shit up.

Yes ask any defense attorney that has handled a case. Most police testimonies are extremely bias and completely contradict what the body cams show. Not to mention most cops fall on the lower IQ side, but high on aggression.

Yes....that and they like power. Not that I'm saying all cops are that way but that attracts some to policing.

Someone who wants to charge and prosecute those with breaking the law requires years of schooling. Someone who wants to defend those charged and prosecuted requires years of schooling. Someone who wants to enforce laws? A few months? Does that make sense?

Agreed, this can't be the whole story. It's straight up murder and that cop wouldn't be on paid leave more in jail cell.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's more to this story. I highly doubt the cop was just sitting in the passenger seat going "That looks like the perfect person to randomly kill for no reason today"...

It is very sad. Our police force needs to learn deadly force is not always the solution, infact they should use it as a last resort not the first.

And you know what the sad part is?

This will get posted to facebook, and show up in everyone's news feed.

Everyone will go "RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE, he has a terrorist name, he's a terrorist! (the officer)"

If and when actual facts show up later, none of these idiots will bother to read them.

That sounds so insane that there has to be more to the story that is not told.

And i don´t think training is the issue here, i think it´s the recruitment process that needs reworking so we catch these lunatics before they get a badge and a gun.

A relatively short training period seems to be reflected in the actions we see today. Of course the candidates who become police officers are suspect as well.

Why you people always wonder why this happens, it's only normal some usa cops shoot first and ask questions later, I mean everyone could have a gun. When she comes up running to the police car one of the cops freaked out, thought it was an assaillant.

I'm not for or against gun control, I live in europe and I never heard of somebody that got shot that didn't have it coming. On the other hand is someone comes up to me with bad intentions, I have no means to to defend myself but my bare hands, I can have a shotgun in the house though.

Maybe the robocop statement isn't such a bad idea, if you're bulletproof, you can wait till they take the first shot.

Running up on two cops in a police vehicle is NOT a threat. Hell people in trouble do run to the police. That is NOT an excuse. The man is freaked by a loud noise then he should NOT be an armed officer. Period.

Have to agree. Not mention he shot from the passenger seat through the driversside window. Meaning there was clearly no threat to him and if he feared for his partner, you don´t shoot right next to him, risking perhaps he moved and hitting him instead.

This whole incident stinks.

People are making race cracks, but they are the same ones who immediately take the cops side when its a black person being shot. I dont care what race you are, we all should treat law enforcement with more scrutiny. They want us at our throats thinking "well its not my race getting shot so I dont care", when this is actually an AMERICA problem.

He's being sarcastic...

Philando Castile police shooting

...It's worth noting how some of the pro-cop crowd in that case and other similar cases are now suddenly taking an anti-cop stance in this case.

Like I previously said in that Philando Castile thread:

Verdict of Philando Castile Police shooting: Not guilty

@Jag85 said:
@eliminatorpaige said:
@Mercenary848 said:

Personally I feel like these continued incidents of harmless/unarmed individuals being shot while complying with the police and the cops being found not guilty, only brew more bad blood between police and everyday citizens. It does not help that the bootlickers rush to the defense of the police without actually paying attention to the scenario. Another day in Americas screwed criminal justice system.

He had a gun. But you are rushing to condemn the cop without much facts. To be honest I saw very little of what happened before he got shot so I can't say until I read more. The cop seemed scared, this is a two sided issue where cops are also scared for their lives due to people wanting them dead. Blaming one side and generalizing like you are doing isn't helping.

Most of the people ignoring the facts are the ones rushing to the cop's defense. The evidence shows that Castile was obeying exactly what Yanez told him to do, and that Castile had done nothing wrong at all. This is what was agreed upon in the courtroom. The only reason Yanez was let off was because he falsely "believed" Castile to be a "threat". In the flawed US criminal justice system, the facts are irrelevant, but the only way to convict a police officer is to somehow disprove the cop's claim that he "believed" the victim was a threat, which places an enormous burden of proof on the prosecution, making a conviction almost impossible. The US criminal justice system is biased in favour of police.

This is why it's so difficult to prosecute a cop. As long as he "believed" he had a reason to "fear for his life", then cops can get away with fatal shootings every time, effectively giving them impunity. And the result of such impunity is local communities losing trust in the police.
