Residents in Wuhan, Ezhou and Huanggang hoard supplies and isolate themselves at home.

A sense of panic has spread in China as three cities accounting for an area of 20 million people were put on lockdown in an attempt to contain a deadly virus.

On Thursday, authorities banned transport links from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, as well as the nearby central Chinese cities of Huanggang and Ezhou, suspending buses, subways, ferries and shutting the airport and train stations to outgoing passengers.

The blockade comes as at least 633 people have been infected with the coronavirus, from the same family of viruses that gave rise to Sars. Officials worry the upcoming lunar new year holiday, when hundreds of millions of Chinese will criss-cross the country, will exacerbate an outbreak that has reached almost all of the country’s provinces, as well as the US, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Macau and Hong Kong.

Chinese authorities said on Thursday that 95 patients were in critical condition. So far, 17 people have died since the virus was detected in late December, all of them in Wuhan.

In Wuhan, supermarket shelves were empty and local markets sold out of produce as residents hoarded supplies and isolated themselves at home. Petrol stations were overwhelmed as drivers stocked up on fuel, exacerbated by rumours that reserves had run out. Local residents said pharmacies had sold out of face masks.

“It feels a lot more panicky now,” said Kathleen Bell, a headhunter living in Wuhan, who is originally from Cheshire in the UK. Bell, who had planned to leave next week for the spring festival holiday, bought a few weeks’ supply of food to wait out the quarantine.

“I think you’ve got to stay calm. These are regulations put into place to prevent the spread so you just assume it’s going to be effective and if you don’t go out you’ll be alright,” she said.

China’s transport ministry has suspended all shuttle buses and ferries going to Wuhan. Hong Kong officials announced on Thursday they would turn two holiday camps, including a former military barracks, into quarantine zones for people who may have come into contact with carriers of the Wuhan virus.

“It’s truly an extraordinary development. You have a city of 10 million people being shut down,” Dali Yang, a professor of political science focusing on China at the University of Chicago, said of Wuhan. “In many ways the local leadership and the population are definitely not prepared. This is truly an emergency for them.”

On Thursday, some residents raced to leave Wuhan before the de facto quarantine was put into effect at 10am local time (0200 GMT), lining up at the airport and at train stations. Local authorities, announcing the emergency measure at about 2am on Thursday, said citizens would be notified later when the restrictions were lifted.

Scientists believe the virus originated from a seafood market in Wuhan that also sold wild animals and likely jumped from an animal to a human. Officials have said it is transmissible from one person to another, and could mutate further.

Anxiety has been exacerbated by reports that sick patients are being turned away from hospitals without enough room. “Infected people could be right beside you and you wouldn’t know. That is what is scarier,” said Xiao, who has not left home since 19 January.

Wuhan’s disease prevention and control centre released a statement on Thursday asking residents not to panic and not to stockpile. “At the present time, Wuhan’s reserves of food, medicine and other supplies are all enough,” it said.

Authorities have made an effort to update citizens regularly on the situation and state media have attempted to frame the shutdown as a battle being waged by the people of Wuhan for the good of the country. The state-run People’s Daily posted on Weibo: “Come on Wuhan, let us win this disease prevention war together!”

But residents are wary of the information provided by their government, which in recent weeks repeatedly said the virus was not serious and was still “controllable”.

“I am a bit panicked because before the government said it wasn’t serious so no one thought it was a big deal,” said Wang Ying, 26, a government worker who described going out amid large crowds on New Year’s Eve, despite the virus being detected then.

“Then this morning, Wuhan was suddenly sealed off. I think the government’s early warnings were not enough.”

Others criticised local authorities, who held a lunar new year banquet of 40,000 people days before authorities announced the virus could be transmitted between humans.

“It’s been a month since the first case was discovered and only now do they think of closing the city? This Wuhan emergency response is a little slow, right???” one internet user wrote on Weibo.

As posts circulated online that food prices had gone up in Wuhan, internet users called for government intervention. One said: “The government needs to address this. If things become too expensive, people will definitely panic and when people feel unsafe, terrible things happen. Right now people are fighting over supplies, soon they may just be fighting.”

Lets see how long it takes a clueless mod to transfer this thread to the politics section.

OT, how are you feeling about this? No worries be happy or are you already typing from your bunker?

Eh. All indications are, this outbreak will be relatively mild. The virus is similar to SARS, but less deadly, less contagious, and the world today is better prepared for it.

Just take some precautions and don't go to China and you should be fine.

Yeah, probably. Just saying, if you don't have to go to China, then you probably shouldn't, just as a precaution.

That said, let's just say some lessons were learned from SARS - and some weren't. We will not know the true extent of this outbreak within China for months.

17 people dead among a population of millions. Hardly the deadly virus the media are trying to push for. At least for now. It's good that precaution measures are in place though.

@Damedius: No that is not correct. It’s a new virus so you will not have immunity from it. It’s called nCOV1. The “n” stands for “new.”

In theory, anyone can catch it.

I am in Zhuhai China right now, been here for over a month. The local government sent out texts a few days ago telling us that there have been around 15 cases so far in the city.

We’ve been told to wear face masks when outside, avoid busy areas and keep washing hands. Go to the hospital if you have a fever with a sore throat/cough, breathing difficulties...

The Chinese news reports that there are now 10 cities in lockdown and they’re worried about mutations of the virus.

But so far, those who have died already had underlying serious illnesses.

So, stay AWAY from China! Besides it’s Lunar New Year the whole country is practically on holiday for at least a week!

Wanna know something freaky? I have a friend who is a dancer, working on a cruise ship with 1,800 guests mostly Asian. They've been told to keep calm, and perform like normal....but they're working with masks, and they've been told that 6 passengers have been taken into isolation. The other passengers dont have a clue why the ship isn't docking at the ports they are supposed to be visiting, and have no idea that they are at risk.

It's not about immunity. Healthy people are more likely to fight off infection and disease. It's why the flu usually kills old people or people with compromised immune systems.

Anyways if you want to believe that it's the end of days and that we are all going to die, go ahead, whatever floats your boat.

There's a simple "yes/no" test I like to administer to hypochondriacs:

  • Are you over the age of 70 or under the age of 10?
  • Do you currently live outside North America or Western Europe?
  • Do you have cancer?

If you answered "no" to these questions....you're going to be fine, chill out.

@Damedius: What a silly thing to say, “it not about immunity.”

You clearly do not understand what you are talking about.

It’s a new form of pneumonia, no one has immunity from it, which is why the Chinese authorities have locked down at least 10 cities and the WHO calls it a National Emergency. (Are they doing this for fun?)

The young and healthy can recover from it, but those who are elderly or have compromised immune systems have a fairly high chance of dying.

I never said it’s the end of days so please don’t put words into my mouth!

WHO just declared it a global emergency. It also surpassed 2002-2003 SARS people infected and soon will surpass MERS people infected. The only good is that the fatality rate is low.

Yeah, kind of expected. This is what I meant by "some lessons were learned, and some were not" earlier. You see, I've been reading of a bit of a disconnect between central and provincial governments in China. Central learned the right lessons and are taking serious action promptly - perhaps even a little too serious. However, provincial governments mentally lag behind in many ways, and are still full of old bad habits, such as a tendency to hide bad news from the central government.

Word is, Wuhan's provincial government knew about the outbreak since at least December, but has been downplaying its severity to the central government. The steep rise in known cases is therefore not so much new infections, but data catching up to facts.

This is why I said we will not know the true extent of the outbreak for quite some time. Stay safe, people, we're going to be hearing about this for a while.

The cases are increasing by 1,000 per day. Soon, it will be 2,000 per day as more and more people start showing symptoms.

Also, a group of scientists at some faculty said the people infected could possibly be 75,000.

Compared to the average influensa. How easily does it infect others, and how lethal is it?

I've read something about 4 times as infectious and 10-15 times as lethal... But no source or anything to back these numbers up.

An excerpt:

Increasingly desperate officials in the quarantined centre of the coronavirus outbreak have tightened controls on an already frightened population, likening the growing crisis to “wartime conditions”.

Authorities in Wuhan city have started going door to door checking temperatures, rounding up suspected coronavirus patients for forcible quarantine in stadiums and exhibition centres that are serving as warehouses for the sick, the New York Times reported.

The city and country face “wartime conditions”, the paper quoted vice-premier, Sun Chunlun, who has been put in charge of the national campaign against the virus, saying on a visit to Wuhan. He said: “There must be no deserters, or they will be nailed to the pillar of historical shame forever.”

More than 34,000 people have now been infected around the world, the vast majority inside China and two-thirds of them in Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province. There have been 724 deaths, all but two of them in China.

@horgen: You don't need to hear rumours, there's actual real-time data. All the data is separated by regions and then by town/city of China and if you can read the news parts, you can find out the location of where the newly infected came from.

Last week, near my parent's house there were four cases in a complex called Chicken Hill xxx (from my own translation I can't read the last word), its a fairly nice complex apparently lots of wild chickens used to reside there.

https://news.qq.com/zt2020/page/feiyan.htm

Over the past 24 hours, there were 89 deaths, 2,653 confirmed infected, 3,916 suspected cases and 599 were cured.

So from the current data, the death rate is around 2% compared to SARS, which was around 10%.

Most people continue to stay at home and only go outside if necessary. When you go outside, you need to wear a facemask. Most shops are closed, but most of the supermarkets remain open unless it's in a super busy district. When you return home (if you live in a gated community as many do) your temperature is checked and you need to stand in a bucket of disinfectant before you're allowed back in.

Despite being the biggest producer of facemasks, there is a shortage in China (due to the Lunar New Year and people not going to work). But in the past week, local governments have been handing 5 out per person. You need to register on an app and they tell you when they will go to your complex.

In case you are concerned, I have sufficient food for three months (I prepared early) and I feel a little guilty as I have 107 medical grade facemasks.

@kadin_kai: It has to do with how much one can trust the number China reports.

@horgen: I suppose you believe that the Chinese government is deliberately providing lower numbers than the actual?

Yawn. The flu virus is deadly also, but so are a lot of things. These sensationalized headlines are just click bait at this point. SARS, Bird Flu, Coronavirus, blah blah... There's deadly diseases and viruses everywhere. That's life.
