So I was reading a couple articles about naming babies.

http://deadspin.com/5924827/american-baby-names-are-somehow-getting-even-worse

http://www.freakonomics.com/2012/02/28/bad-news-for-people-with-hard-to-pronounce-names/

and all I could think was "god damn, what is wrong with people?" I don't think this problem is isolated to white trash parents.

In light of these disturbing names, I propose we go back to just naming people after figures from the bible, who's with me?

If I ever have kids, I'll probably name them something a little old fashion that isn't used much anymore.

People just need to go back to naming their kids somewhat normal names. Unique names were neat back when nobody had them but that seems to be the new thing now. Now I hear what all these kids are named and I've never heard of any of these names before in my life.

What I don't get is the new wave of biblical names. They haven't been popular in 2k years, why bring them back now? The other is naming them after actual things...Sky, Star, cinnamon...they sound like strippers. I think if I have a kid I'm going to name him ceiling fan! :P

Some english speaking people I've met have a really hard time pronouncing my name.

To this day I wonder why the english translation for Guilherme is William (or vice-versa). I guess according to the freakonomics I'd be doomed working elsewhere.

I read something on STFUPARENTS about bad baby names. Somebody named their kids(twins) Summer Rain and Autumn Breeze, they were supposed to be switched but found out Summer Breeze is a vaginal douching product. My boyfriend says if we have girls he wants Trinity and Serenity. I said I don't want my kids named like strippers. Out the door with that goes any girl name with an X in it, apart from maybe "Alex" or something normal. OH, and for whatever reason, I was watching birth videos on youtube, and came across some girl who claims to have had her first kid at 11 and then at 14 later on, but all her kids' middle names (she has six kids now, I believe) are Harry Potter characters. Albus, Remus, Ginny, Hermione etc. Those kids (if they're even real children and she's not a 14 year old attention seeker) are going to be a running joke in school, because all the parents will have read HP as kids and teens. http://mommyish.com/stuff/stfu-parents-crazy-baby-names/ There are some there so bad I just have no words.

I dont get people wo name their girls after cars/ Porsher, Mercedes....andthe latest one thats gained traction over in the states. Skylar...

Its usually parents by parents who couldnt afford these brands, I guess coping mechanisms differ from person to person.

It just sets the kid up for a life of correcting people on how to say or spell his/her name.

What's even more narcissistic is parents who pass on hyphenated last names to their kids...

Why are people acting like 80% of western civilization still doesn't use biblical names? When was the last time you went a week without meeting at least one Michael, David, Daniel, Jacob, Nathaniel, Joshua or a John.

Most of those names aren't even creative - they're just taking existing names and spelling them all weird. My name is Michael and while it's a bit common and boring I like it. After all, names are just sounds people make to get your attention.

I do actually prefer to use either biblical names or names of great saints, missionaries, or preachers as an origin for whatever I might name any future children. Such names would include Josiah, Joshua, Joseph, Judah, Isaiah, and Ezekiel but I'll probably think twice about some names like Judas.
