I have a vista so maybe I can help

Your main volume is at 100?
so with that up to 100, put put your speakers to the loudest it can get.

That's all I can think of...

Huh? If you're getting headaches, it;s most likely to loud. And if you really, really, really, want a migraine than check to see if there's a volume knob on your speakers.

I know wome audio codecs, like AC3, will allow you to increase the gain, but I'm not sure there's any easy way of achieving the same thing in a standard Vista environment.

Maybe it is your speakers that are the problem?

I've got Vista. I have two volume keys. One on the keyboard and one on the screen. Have you tried the screen one?

But, I have to agree. It isn't loud enough. Especially when I have screaming brothers running around.

Oh wait, that's probably the problem. Check your start menu for the AC3 options or control panel or whatever they call it and just whack up the gain.

Try some headphones. Sounds like your laptop speakers are not very loud.

The issue isn't the volume control, it's that your laptop has low power speakers. If you want more volume get some active speaker or an amp + passives

What headphones? You may need to get a headphone amp or some more sensitive/lower impedance headphones

I have a laptop.

Laptops are generally pretty low themselves.. I just use a pair of earphones for mine.
