What are true musical geniuses? We all know Bethoveen and Mozart. And honestly I thought Van Morrison was. Thats the only ones I can think of right now off the top of my head.

I think Davis Wise is a fantastic composer. What he did was great. I also am a huge fan of Bach, above Mozart and others.

If we are talking about more contemporary rock artists. I think Niel Peart, and David Gilmore/Roger Waters were way ahead of their time.

Well, Tom Scholz of Boston comes to mind, as he actually was very smart and improved the sound of the guitars, helping their songs sound so awesome.

Steve Vai. Not composing-wise, but playing-wise, he's a master of his instrument, and nothing less.

And of course Aeris' Theme.

Tupac. He was more of a poet but my God was some of his lyrics ahead of their times and very deep imo.

Lars Ulrich. Metal is the new classical. \m/

Honestly I think I'm far from qualified to judge this because I just listen to music for the sheer pleasure of it and don't give a care if it's marketable pop, or obscure ambientesque indie electronica. I've been told I need to force myself to listen to certain bands and give them a chance to grow on me but I figure if I hate them the first time I hear them, why should I force myself to like them just because they're "genius"?

Tchaikovsky has to be mentioned if you mention Beethoven. Though I don't like them, Coldplay is excellent at portraying a mood through their music. I can't really think of many modern composers I would call genius. There's some great lyricists, but the music frequently sucks.

Let me tell you something. His song "Fives" is one of the most beautiful, immaculate things I have ever heard; and when I say "things", that includes everything in my life.

Malcolm Mclaren for his vision... Jaz Coleman for diversity perhaps. I'm sure there are many... Hell I'll throw in Johnny Greenwood as well for his creativity with the guitar - great score for There Will Be Blood...

Ringo Starr is incredible at what he does, but I wouldn't call him a genius.
