I've yet to see Lincoln so I can't comment on it. I'm actually not a fan of his performance in Gangs of New York, I felt like he just got way too over the top and at times it felt like he was playing a James Bond villain instead of an old time gangster.
in some ways, he was a bit of a bond villain. it's funny he was cast as lincoln in the spielberg film, because he's portrayed in gangs as the anti-lincoln. and it's not just the straight lincoln like in his newest role, but the crazy super lincoln of folklore. my favorite scene in gangs is when they're all at the tom show and there's the assassination attempt on butcher bill that mirrors the one on lincoln (who is portrayed on stage as an angel). of course, bill survives on rage and turns the whole thing into another racist tirade while lincoln is pelted by rotten vegetables.
