Poll To all video gamers out there: How is "ocarina" pronounced? (24 votes)

"Awk•a•reena" 63%
"Oak•a•reena" 29%
Another way not listed 8%

This is a dispute that a friend and I had together recently, he being the facetious one who is always wanting to challenge what is commonly accepted as true. He pronounced "ocarina" as "oak•a•reena", which to me sounded weird, considered that I had played "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" and have heard it from multiple sources of it being pronounced "awk•a•reena". He, however, very convincingly showed me that the word "ocarina" was named by the Spanish during colonial times, which derived from the Spanish nickname for the instrument, "little goose". After doing a little research, I discovered that the Spanish word for goose, "oca" is pronounced, "oak•a"; thus, the correct pronunciation of the word "ocarina" is "oak•a•reena".

I am still doubtful that it is actually pronounced "oak•a•reena" and that it is actually pronounced "awk•a•reena". So, to solve this mystery, I have resorted to GameSpot.

What do you think is the correct answer? Answer that you feel is the most correct.

Cheers,

- Blujay

I mean if it's a little like Japanese the o isn't aw. More like the o in chose or oak I suppose. I don't know Spanish though :P

I always said ohkahreenah but that's because it makes more sense in my language that way. In google translate set to Spanish it sounds like an o from oak. I'm sorry man, I think that's just the way it is.

I imagine in Japan it is "oh-kah-ree-nah" but I am not positive about that.

In the US I usually hear it "ah-kah-ree-nah" but the "ah" is pretty soft; it's not like someone yelling "Ahhh!! you scared me" it's halfway between an "oh" and "ah".

Awk.

I have never heard it pronounced the other way. From Ontario Canada.

Maybe they say Oak in Quebec or Newfoundland LOL

The real instrument is pronounced with an Awww sound.

It's one of the oldest instruments discovered, dating back over 12,000 years.

Versions of Ocarinas have been found in both ancient Asian Cultures as well as the ancient aztecs and Mayans

@KungfuKitten: No worries! I'm just trying to get a concrete answer here. I didn't know if it was a special way Nintendo pronounced it, where they specifically call it "awk•a•reena" as their own fictional instrument, kinda like how "Pirates of the Caribbean" is said funny because Walt Disney pronounced "Caribbean" as "care•uh•bee•an".

For years, I actually was pronouncing it "orc-a-reena" because for some reason, my dyslexic ass kept putting an extra R in there.

The first one, though as a kid I pronounced it 'oh-car-inna'. I can remember thinking that they made it up just for the game as well. I didn't realise it was an actual instrument.

In English a Vowel-Consonant-Vowel should make the "O" sound like "oh", so in English it would be "Oak-Arena" but it's a Spanish word, so I think the Awk way is right. Tomato tomawwto.... Long vowels are a general rule when it's a V-C-V but there's obvious exceptions.

Neither, it's ok-uh-ree-nah.

Has a hard O sound unlike in oak or awk.
