Thoughts on Gordon Ramsay

What's your thoughts on Gordon Ramsay and his work? Do you respect his work or is he just some loud bloke who shouts at easy targets for the tv?

Stuff like this I find interesting but his other stuff seems very exploitative. Especially Kitchen Nightmares where it comes across as people are just putting up with his shit because they are getting a free makeover. However, it is entertaining.

Here's my take on Gordon Ramsay. Gordon has been awarded 15 total, and still holds 14 of them. He's absolutely the real deal as a chef. That said, I would be inclined to believe that his celebrity status has virtually zero bearing on being awarded those stars, though there has been some allegations of bias before. (mostly in regards to French cuisine) Even if he was awarded them because of it, he received (I think) 4 or 5 of them before he even became a widely popular TV personality. I'm sure due to the nature of reality TV, his personality is often exaggerated. Then again, you're probably going to come off as arrogant when you have such exceedingly high standards like he does. The things he subjects contestants to in Hell's Kitchen is nothing compared to the hell that is a real kitchen.

In another way, his cooking is legit! That man really knows his stuff. It's just that he takes it to the next level. Direct, harsh and isn't afraid to speak his mind. A certain arrogance that comes only if you are 100% know that what you do is top notch. People recognize that arrogance, but in a sense, it's a deserve form of arrogance. Plus he still has manners outside of the kitchen and is a generally good person. At least from what I've seen from shows and behind the scenes stuff like that, good sense of humor. In short, he knows his shit, but also knows how to entertain and proceeds to earn his money that way.

I love Gordon Ramsey. He's practically a god of cooking and his shows are always fun to watch! To me, he comes across as someone who is very hectic and is always on a schedule. Gordon always wants everything done fast. He talks fast. And he paces around like a gerbil on coffee. I never understood why. Frankly, Gordon's impatience makes him a shitty psychiatrist, whenever he takes someone out back to talk about their feelings. He does give good advice though.

He's entertaining enough.

Gordon is the real deal, at least as far as a TV personality can be a real deal.

He is a legit chef, first and foremost. This is especially important given the fact that he is English, and people don't really give English food much credit. The guy has a solid grasp on all cuisines, too; it's the reason why he can go into a pub, sushi restaurant, Italian joint, or French bistro, and somehow tell them what to make and how to make it, and make it work. Not many people have that thorough a repertoire.

Second, I was a chef; and let me tell you, chefs with Gordon's attitude are a dime a dozen. Chefs are, for the most part, assholes. At least the head chefs and sous chefs.

Third, it's incredibly entertaining, especially for me due to a sense of schadenfruede, to see people get yelled at by this chef because I was yelled at by chefs too.

Finally, I think he is actually a good guy, because on occasion you see his light shine through on Kitchen Nightmares (and that show with the kids).

If anything, I don't think Ramsey gets enough credit. In a world filled with lame celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver, Rachel Ray, Guy Fieri, and so, Ramsey is definitely the real deal.

This is all just based off of youtube clips mostly. Hell's Kitchen and the American version of Kitchen Nightmares are a litte over dramatic partially due to how it's edited. Gordon is mildy amusing in both. Though I hope he never treated his actual restuarant staff like that.

Never seen his show with the kids.

Never been to his restaurants, I assume they're good.

Seems like he worked pretty hard before he made it big.

He seems much more human in the UK Kitchen Nightmares.

Actually that's a poor choice of words, I'm used to humans being yelling raging assholes. It is perhaps the default mode.

He's the great. Love watching him. He's actually a really good teacher, in addition to be a fantastic chef.

Gorden Ramsey always came off as arrogant and a loudhead, but after watching him do more personalised interviews where he is not at work it´s clear that he is like all big chefs very passionate about his job and people like that will not accept anything less than perfect.

And as to his food, I have been to a few of his restaurants and even when he is not there you can feel the passion and quality is top-notch. Which explains his many Michelin stars, and if anyone thinks they are awarded because of his status they need to read up on the Michelin guide because you do not get anything you do not deserve with them.

Also at least he is not Jamie who is just messed up.

But I have to say my favourite chef is, of course, Heston Blumenthal he is epic and the added chemistry element makes it interesting to eat his food.

You are 100% correct, the Michelin guide is nothing to mess with, it is the real deal. Back when I had no idea, I remember reading that so and so had "one star" and I was like "pffft, guy only has one out of five stars, lame" but now I know better haha.

To have multiple restaurants and multiple Michelin stars is no small feat, that's for damn sure. If you're on Instagram I recommend following their official account, you are constantly shown incredible food and meals from restaurants they rate.

And yeah, Blumenthal is freaking incredible.

Basically, the entire casting process is a sick gauntlet of emotional mind games designed to push people to their limit before they step foot in front of a camera, select the ones most likely to inflict needless drama on each other, and then set them loose on each other in front of a bunch of cameras, in HK's case with a middle-aged man screaming at them and insulting them while they attempt to perform one of the most stressful jobs around. It is literally hell. Seriously, that is like the entire torture plan of hell's demons in The Good Place. They thought up a way to torture people for eternity and they came up with reality TV. Real kitchens are staffed by trained professionals who know a little bit about dealing with stress and can complain to HR if their boss screams that they're a cow at them. Reality TV is worse.

Is obviously a really good chef, and if you watch the original UK Hell's Kitchen you'd see he's actually not as much of an asshole as they make him seem in the American version of the show.

The only show he yells uncontrollable profanity on is the American shows (Hell's Kitchen and US Kitchen Nightmares). He is an extremely nice guy (watch him cooking with his family) and down to Earth.

For a man who owns restaurants with a combined total of 16 Michelin Stars, he knows a little bit about gastronomy.

He recently posted a video of him going to visit a girl with cancer. Really touching stuff.

Overall, without going into too much detail I'd say he's a very hard working guy and has achieved a lot for himself. On top of that, he seems like a great father to his children.

Reality TV is pretty exploitative in every country. I'm not saying it isn't a little toned down in the UK, but it's still pretty bad, and most of the worst stuff goes on behind the scenes. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, just be realistic about what the people appearing on these shows go through.

And I never meant to imply that the persona we see Gordon portray on TV is what he's like in real life. I'm perfectly aware that it's a curated act meant to amplify some of his traits/stereotypes about chefs. However, if he's a perfectly nice guy in real life and he turns on a facade of being a total asshole in order to make money at the expense of the mental well-being of the people who appear on his show, you have to ask yourself how nice he really is. Being personable is not the only component of being a nice person.

Michelin is full of amazing places and as to the rigours attention their food agents do, just look at Noma or a number of the places that have been recognized as the worlds best restaurants, not even after that honour do they get "more" stars.

Yup, Blumenthal is incredible and it´s a shame he is not more used because his attention to detail and food is amazing.

Would recommend. Watching him cook with his daughter is endearing.

I can’t stand the guy and YouTube keeps recommending his videos despite I keep telling YouTube I am not interested!

However, he is very good at taking the shell of a lobster.

I think he has a great heart deep down and a lot of passion for cooking and culinary.

He’s a douchebag for show. Which makes him even more of a douchebag.

He plays up for American audiences but he is a very genuine guy 1 on 1 with people when it comes to cooking and helping them.

I thoroughly enjoy every one of his shows.

He's an amazing chef, and he's entertaining as all hell. If you watch Hell's Kitchen or any of his other shows, when he cooks, he makes a 5-star finessed meal so quickly, cooked perfectly, and it looked beautiful.
