Bit of an open ended topic eh? I'll bite. I'd say selfishness. It's led to a lot of pain and suffering over the centuries.
Watching your only daughter get slowly eaten alive by army ants. That or cancer. Or ebola. Hell, might as well just lump all horrible deadly diseases into the same category. You know what else would be really bad? Going to war when you're still a young attractive horny man, and then getting blown up. But not badly enough to kill you. Instead, you simply lose your arms and your legs and your d***. And half your face gets blown off too, so even your face looks like nothing but a mound of horrible scars. And also, you can't talk. But you can still see and hear, so you have to spend the next 40 or 50 years living in that state. Not being able to do ANYTHING, and seeing nothing but the horrified look on peoples' faces every time they get a glimpse of you....what do you think it is? It could be anything - literal, philosophical, metaphorical, political ect.
For me, it's having no future.

Watching everything you ever loved or cared for slowly destroyed in the most brutal ways possible the moment after you acheived what you thought was your greatest goal in life.

A moral code that teaches that serving your own interests is bad, but serving others at your own expense is good. A moral code stating that your life is not inherently valuable, and that your worth is solely based on the extent that you can be used by others.Locked-in syndrome, and being kept alive for the duration of your life whilst everybody is ignorant to the fact that you are conscious.
