Bit of an open ended topic eh? I'll bite. I'd say selfishness. It's led to a lot of pain and suffering over the centuries.

Watching your only daughter get slowly eaten alive by army ants. That or cancer. Or ebola. Hell, might as well just lump all horrible deadly diseases into the same category. You know what else would be really bad? Going to war when you're still a young attractive horny man, and then getting blown up. But not badly enough to kill you. Instead, you simply lose your arms and your legs and your d***. And half your face gets blown off too, so even your face looks like nothing but a mound of horrible scars. And also, you can't talk. But you can still see and hear, so you have to spend the next 40 or 50 years living in that state. Not being able to do ANYTHING, and seeing nothing but the horrified look on peoples' faces every time they get a glimpse of you.

Watching everything you ever loved or cared for slowly destroyed in the most brutal ways possible the moment after you acheived what you thought was your greatest goal in life.

How can you value things and regard things as being good or bad without a moral code to measure them by?

My preferences are based on what I consider to be the most conducive to create a peaceful society based on individualism and unfettered free association. All of those things are purely subjective, though, and I realize that not everyone (not most, in fact) share those values.

Just a guess, but he's probably using the Randian definition of altruism, which has a more obscure and esoteric meaning than the word used in common speech.

A moral code that teaches that serving your own interests is bad, but serving others at your own expense is good. A moral code stating that your life is not inherently valuable, and that your worth is solely based on the extent that you can be used by others.

Because that's the society I would want to exist in, and I think it's pretty utilitarian also. If you value peace, wealth, decentralization of power and such, it's the way to go. If you value something else over those things, there's no reason you should agree with me on this

I feel like you're dodging the issue of why. Why would you want to live in a free society of individuals? If your reason for wanting to live in such a society is a because you value those things, and your reason for valuing those things is because you want them, then that seems like a circular line of reasoning that doesn't really explain anything.

The most fundamental reason is that I believe such a society would benefit me. I am an egoist, and I don't think I need to justify it any more than that, really. However, I also view authority structures as abstractions, spooks of the mind that people lend legitimacy to due to their belief.in them. I see no real reason why I or anyone else should prostrate themselves to serve these interests

When you're driving, whether intoxicated, high, dirty, WHATEVER and you hear whoop!whoop! and see lightbars flashing behind you. Seriously the worst feeling in the world as you feel the car shaking and the sound of tires on non-paved road. Haha, just throwing that out there cause its not good the thought of losing ones freedom.
