Does anyone else agree with me that The Smiths are one of, if not the greatest, bands of all time? I mean,in the short time they were together they recorded four hit records, including 'The Queen Is Dead', which regularly appears very highly on 'greatest album of all time' lists. Morrissey's fantastic, witty lyrics and Marr's musical genius surely make this one of the greatest acts ever? They invented indie as a genre, and bands as diverse as Oasis and Fall Out Boy admit to being influenced and inspired by them. What does everyone else think?

I don't like the Smiths, but I can see why other people do.

A brilliant band (Johnny Marr is a guitar god), but I wouldnt call them the best....I got a bit bored of them, but I still listen to their S/T and the QID sometimes....

Also, Joy Division are the best Manchester band, they don't get as much attention as The Smiths sadly

Also, I think it was R.E.M. that invented indie/alternative rock with 1983's Murmur (from Allmusic: REM marked the point where post punk turned to alternative rock)

I find the QID a bit boring as well, except Cemetry Gates (God, I love that song), but I think the S/T is miles better.....
