Yes they are words, words that have certain meanings. Are part of the meaning of the words is that they are partially offensive.

They're just words that were sometime ago called "vulgar", even though they're just words, and not even the Bible says anything about it so I see no substance to that statement at all. Basically, I don't give a ****ing **** about those goddamn words. Who ever gives a **** about them shouldn't.

No word in and of itself is offensive.

It's the context in which you use it.

I was just thinking the other day of why ass is considered a curse and butt is the "preferred" term. Ass undoubtedly has a harsher sound to it, but I was contemplating if that was innate or not. In a departure from my typical line of thinking, I arrived at the conclusion that ass just has a harsher sound to it than butt innately, and that as such it is easier used to offend.

And yes, before any of you ask, I do spend most of my free time thinking about ass.

Well, if we didn't give words power at all then not only would we lose the power to offend, but to soothe, entertain, exhilerate, enchanct, and all the other awesome things words do.

It's just a cultural thing. Imo going out and swearing around old ladies and people who you know are very conservative is wrong - be respectful of peoples comfort zones. Also all words carry connotations and some words are more sophisticated than others - if you swear all the time and use vulgar word choice people will think you sound like trash.

How? They're just words, if I say poopy or crap people aren't offended and yet they have the exact same meaning as ****. What's the difference?

Your right, they are just words. In fact, if it weren't considered religiously and culturally unacceptable, they wouldn't be bad at all. They generally aren't offensive words, it's just the type of power people give to them because it is not "morally correct" to say those type of words according to different religion's and society's views. Basically what I'm trying to say, is that curse words are considered curse words because of religions and society which deem them unacceptable because, they ARE after all, ancient curses which can be considered praising, agreeing or some how have something to do with the devil or other "evil beings".

poopy = baby talk crap = weird substitute for the S word **** = controversial, vulgar word that is still widely used. The difference isn't in meaning but connotation. Another example: Sir, Brah, Mister, Dude can all mean the same thing but carry different connotations.

It's not so much the word, but the hate and general crudness associated with it. If you drop the f bomb after every other word you say you sound like an idiot, but at the same time if you dropped the f bomb at someone in anger you were intentionally trying to added a hint of loathing to your language. Part of social interaction is simple inflections and how we say things.
