When you, if you, watch foreign language movies/TV do you change the language to your native language or use the original language and read subtitles?

I prefer to use the original language and use subtitles. Though you can probably miss some visuals doing that but I like to immerse myself in the culture of the product. What say you?

Subtitles for foreign shows/films. Dubbing usually sucks. I hate subtitles for shows/games in English, I find it distracting.

The only dub I prefer is for anime I used to watch. Couldn't stand the girly/screeching original sound. Didn't get along with weebs.

Subtitles all the way.

Granted dubs weren't a thing when I grew up except for shows aimed at kids younger than 7.

I usually game when I watch movies, and if a movie was dubbing, I'll always use that over the subtitles. I don't care how bad it is. I listen to movies more than I watch them, so subtitles are nothing but a big inconvenience for me.

Subtitles for sure. Unless it's Anime. Sometimes I can watch the dub. Just depends on how I'm feeling.

Generally I'm a fan of subs over dubs. There are a lot of ways that dubs can be done poorly, such as voices that don't match the characters, acting quality, sound mixing, etc. Using Netflix foreign shows as an example, most dubs don't do a particularly good job. The only downside of subs is I can't multitask subbed shows. I get a lot of my TV binging done while working, which generally requires the show to be in English. Cop procedurals/crime mysteries often make for good background TV, but at this point I've gone through most of the English language ones on the platform.

I watch all my movies with subtitles. When it comes to foreign, it really depends. Depends if the dubs are done right. Also depends if it is a visual heavy movie where I want to see the action.

Most recent foreign movies I watched were Space Sweepers (dubbed) and The Call (original).

I always use subtitles. For movies in English that's easy to understand (so not Trainspotting) I play them at a 1.2 seconds delay (so they lag a bit and don't spoil what it is about to be said).

For foreign movies I might use them with a 0.8 or 1.0 seconds delay.

Technically speaking, in order to read subtitles you must also be watching the movie. 😉

I watched in both subtitles was a more enjoyable experience a bad dub movie makes you feel like you just huffed paint.

English dub for most anime. Sub for live action. The desync in live action dubbing always kills it for me.
