well, no doubt they are, but just sexualizing for appeal is a long shot from objectification of women, comic books tend to give some depth and personality to their characters to make them more than just objects of sexual fantasies
also, even if men look at some women as sexual objects, there's a respect there, while feminists might act like it's men that hate women, it's usually women that are the biggest jelly haters and shit talkers of other women, and that's the stone cold hard fucking truth
Well, they usually TRY to give some depth and personality to their characters.
In any case, this shit is par for the course for superhero comics. I'm not even gonna try to dignify it, but I'm not gonna villify it either. Historically, this shit has just been porn for young males who were too young to actually buy porn. Too young to get a subscription to Hustler? Then go buy the Spider-Woman comics and wank off to the illustrations of superheroines with their tits and asses practically hanging out. I'm not gonna try to portray this shit as respectful. But as someone who looks at porn, **** it. It's porn for little kids and anime/comic nerds. And...that's fine. Or it's not. But if it's not, then I'm not gonna throw the first stone here.
Sex is a motivator, it's biological, and it's a damn strong one. Using it to sell comics exploits the audience just as much as those it portrays. Women are aware of the power of their sexuality and they use it to their benefit. It's behavior deeply embedded in our socially constructed notions of gender roles. To have to contend with more idealized images of sex appeal, that takes power away from women, and that's the power of their sexuality. The level playing field in equality is that people should be treated on the merit of their character, first and foremost. Well, that would be all fine and good if we were rational people, unfortunately when sexual motivation is involved rational goes right out the window. Women claim they want a nice guy in touch with his feelings, then throw themselves in passion at the bad boy. Guys have feelings but expressing them is considered weak, and is responded to as such by both ends of the gender gap. We're dubious, fickle beings, because there's constantly a rational side and irrational side at battle with each other. We're not so shallow that we don't require meaningful sustenance in our connections with others, but the spice and allure of sexuality is going to always have power. We'd be hypocrites to assume otherwise.
Whereas you or I differ on the respect issue, men can appreciate the sexual imagery of women respectfully, whether our reactions be titillating or tantalizing. The vilifying of this by modern feminists is that indulging in such is objectifying, which by their account amounts to a patriarchal belief that we as men are entitled to possess, use, control and dispose of that which we find desirable. I take issue with this on grounds that men don't typically claim entitlement and reciprocation just because they desire it. And that as far as I'm concerned is respect.
