Astronomers heard two mysterious radio signals from outside our galaxy – unexplained blasts of radio energy which last a few milliseconds.

Scientists are genuinely baffled by the signals, the first of which was detected in 2011 – and some have suggested the signals could come from aliens.

A new signal detected this week actually ruled out some of the more boring explanations – and one Australian astronomer working with them admitted that scientists have ‘no idea’ what the signals are.

Scientists using the Parkes radio telescope in Australia heard two ‘Fast Radio Bursts’ this month – separated by just 2.4 milliseconds, according to researchers at the Max Planck Institute.

Radio telescopes have detected Fast Radio Bursts since 2001 – incredibly short, high-energy pulses which last for a few milliseconds and erupt with the energy the sun releases in a day.

But follow-up searches by non-radio telescopes have come up empty – leaving the source of the high-energy signals a mystery.

Astronomers have previously speculated the signals could come from evaporating black holes, or even from distant alien civilisations.

The new ‘double flash’ rules out some of the sources astronomers previously thought might cause Fast Radio Bursts.

For instance, the bursts could not be caused by neutron stars colliding – as they can collide only once.

Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual (Haynes), says, ‘Every unusual signal from outer space encourages us to wonder if it is from an alien civilisation.

It would be fantastic if this is an alien signal as the knowledge that we are not alone in this vast universe would have a dramatic impact on our perception of our place in the scheme of things.’

‘It would certainly give the opportunity for UFO spotters to say we told you aliens exist – and you didn’t believe us!’

Good god, you can't swing a dead alien hypercat in space without hitting something that throws off radio waves in giant superpowered static bursts but it's always aliens with these tabloids isin't it?

Yeah you're not wrong... would definitely cause a bit of a stir in a certain few circles (*cough* religion *cough*).

Great, if the signal is 100 million light years away what you wanna bet they're still around even if it truly was an advanced alien race?

Lets send a signal back and wait for a response.

Wouldn't be the first time they've detected a strange signal spike.

Like the "Wow!" signal back in 1977.

I don't think it would! Not all people who believe in a higher power live underneath rocks. The only people who believe that there's a gap between Science and Religion are only looking at it from one side or the other.

I grew up in a home where the 2 extremes coexisted and I can tell you, there's no gap at all.

Just out of curiosity, which religions maintain that there cannot be aliens because of religious reasons?

Point being, it's long been established that Earth isn't at the center of the universe, that the cosmos doesn't revolve around us, and that evolution is a scientific fact. That's not to say that ALL religious people recognize such things, but how's this gonna make a difference? If you're the kind of person who's gonna throw a fit because of the realization that there are aliens, you're probably already denying evolution and saying that the devil put dinosaur fossils on Earth in order to tempt humanity into denying creationism. Anyone who's gonna freak out about the discovery of aliens is probably ALREADY freaking out. Meanwhile, most religious people are just gonna say, "gee that's neat" and go about their day like everyone else.

Ok, what the heck is a 2.4 milisecond ? Lol .. my guess is its less then a second ? And again the 1st time was in 2011, why do they not tell us when things happen !

If you are religious and find that to be true, then you're an hypocrite. Most religions are pretty specific how the universe and all life on earth was created.

Doesn't matter if I'm religious and it doesn't matter if I'm a hypocrite. I'm still right.

Yeah I see your point... but I just think it'd be interesting to see how certain religions or religious people react to it.

I mean there are still people that believe that "God" placed humans on Earth in our current form for goodness sake.

They would probably loose quite a couple ships getting here but when they do they would want refuge and claim our benefits.

milli = 1000.

as in millennium or millimeter.

so 2.4 milliseconds would be 24 thousandths of a second in imperial.

We already have sent the signal into space few times... We just need to wait another ~99,998,000 years. or even more since its radio waves...

Even if the signal is from an alien source... they are most probably way more advanced than the signals we have received from them....

Maybe we just got the VERY first Radio Wave from the Alien planet?? :P "Testing-Testing"

As exciting as the prospect of Alien life would be, I could just see us getting nuked over some dumb shit someone from this planet did. We can't even get along in peace on this little blue ball we call Earth, imagine how some would react to something that's not even human.

I hope whatever we come in contact with is tolerant.

Who gives a flying ****, there will certainly be aliens out there but at this time, they are simply too far away.

Even lightspeed is like travelling by turtle on earth and we're nowhere even near that, heck einstein said it wouldn't even be possible and that's just light speed.

At lightspeed it would take us 120 000 years just to get to the edge of the milky way or 4 years to the nearest star which probably doesn't even have planets and if they have they will probably be unhabitable. By the time you actually find an alien you probably died a thousand times already.

If we achieve immortality and we can actually travel near lightspeed, then i might be interested in aliens.

I wonder if alien women are more slooty than the women here on earth. Soon we will find out for sure. I think ours are the best.
