I don't use the radio in my car. I like to pay attention to what's going on around me since so many people are IDIOTS behind the wheel.

[QUOTE="ROFLCOPTER603"]

Going the speed limit? Ain't nobody got time for that.

I'd say he has it down.

br0kenrabbit

The speed limit is not an arbitrary number, it's an engineering decision taking into account the type of asphalt, the grade of the road, the run of the road (straight, curvy, blind hill, etc.), traffic and intersection data.

If you're speeding and someone else hits you, you can still be assigned some fault.

bottom line

KNOW your limits

KNOW your car

KNOW the weather / road conditions

most important WATCH OTHER PEOPLE. You can't control people but, you sure can watch them.

[QUOTE="br0kenrabbit"]

So I'm being nice and offering a neighbor a ride about an hour ago since her car is in the shop. We get in, I buckle up, and wait for her to.

She doesn't.

So I tell her, "You'll need to buckle up."

She then goes on a rant about how her uncle was in a car wreck and 'they' said he would have died if he had been wearing his seatbelt, this that and the other thing.

So once she finishes, I'm like "you'll need to buckle up."

So then she huffs and puffs and buckles up, but then takes off the shoulder strap and puts it behind her.

"Properly," I said, at which point I get another long rant about personal freedom and decisions.

I still haven't started the car, so we just sit there in silence for a minute before she finally huffs "fine" and does herself up properly. Then off we go.

Seriously, everyone I know who doesn't wear seatbelts has the same story about an uncle or a cousin (never someone I have met) who 'they' said would have died had they been wearing a seatbelt. It's old, tired and stupid.

Most of the road fatalities I read about usually mentions "seatbelts were not in use". Is it so damn hard to understand basic laws of physics?

Seriously.

lightleggy

I have a friend who refuses to wear seatbelt, not even because he says it's safer without it, he just provides no reason at all, the guy is driving, and I tell him "dude, buckle up" and he says "no, I dont wear a seatbelt".

I go "buckle up I said, it takes no effort"

and he just ignores me, he said something that he isn't afraid to die or something like that, OK cool maybe if he was in some war or doing something heroic, i'd appreciate that comment, but saying that you wont wear a seatbelt because "you aint afraid to die" is just dumb, the "im not afraid to die" card is supposed to be played before doing something that will help other people but might get you killed, not when there is absolutely no reason to be safe.

Also I have a friend who is a paramedic who told me that the "would have died with a seatbelt" thing is BS, he explained the exact reason to me, but I dont remember.

I always buckle up, and everyone should.

sounds like friend needs flip his car...

anyways seat does cause issues in some cases. specially for people who don't wear it correct or smaller people. It can send a lot of force to your chest area and cause internal damage. Just like airpages they can sometimes do more good then harm if your sitting to close.

Reminds me of this.

Derek Kieper was a smart, funny, intense young man who relished a good debate and would do anything for his friends.

Kieper, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died early Tuesday morning when the Ford Explorer he was a passenger in travelled off an icy section of Interstate 80 and rolled several times in a ditch. Kieper, who was riding in the back seat of the Explorer, was ejected from the vehicle.

Two others in the vehicle, including the driver, Luke Havermann of Ogallala, and the front-seat passenger,Nick Uphoff of Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

In a column written for the Daily Nebraskan in September, Derek attacked seat belt laws as intrusions on individual liberties and expensive to enforce.

"It is my choice what type of safety precautions I take," he wrote.

Damn that's a shame, I always buckle up, even when im on the backseat.

I kind of made that sound more critical than it was supposed to. I honestly don't wear it all the time- if I'm moving my car to another parking space I won't bother. But if it's anywhere more than a few feet or where I have to travel on the road I will.

My car screams at me if i dont, so.. no choice lol. I feel naked in a car if im not wearing a seatbelt.

BUT.. if its an old car with a lap belt. ..idk. tough call. It might keep you in the car but could do alot of internal damage. Bit of a gamble that..

Motokid6
I think it's even illegal to use a lap belt...cars which had it stopped being produced in the late 60s I think, and you are legally required to change them into a regular crossed chest belt, which isn't expensive at all. and if you ask me, the driver seat should be required to have a 5 points seatbelt.

I always wear my seat belt when driving or riding. Some of the idiots I work with are pretty bad drivers. There was one wreck I was in where it is a good thing I wasn't wearing a seat belt, otherwise I would have hit my head and probably had been hurt seriously. I was also lucky that I wasn't ejected as it happened on top of the Coleman Bridge crossing the York River in VA. It's a good hundred or so feet to the water. Also, show this video to your friend: cab driver falls asleep to show her where he ends up.

It is stupid to mandate the use of seatbelts. Any intelligent person will use it anyways, anyone stupid enough to refuse to where one deserves the consequences of his actions, and anyone who forgets to wear it shouldn't be pulled over and fined for an honest mistake.

Well it's true that the radio is a distraction and that there are many awful drivers (and a disproportionately large percentage of them listen to the radio while driving).

You'd have a point if it weren't for the fact that other drivers would be at risk too if you fly out your windshield onto traffic.

If you're in my car, you're wearing an effing seatbelt. If I'm driving, I don't want a fine because my passenger wasn't buckled in. You can have personal freedom in your own goddamn vehicle, not mine. People who cite the handful of situations where a person in the vehicle would have died had they been wearing their seatbelt, they're idiots. 95% of the time if you're not wearing your seatbelt, you'll get ejected from the vehicle, or thrown around enough to maim you far worse than what would have happened WITH a seatbelt holding you in place. The only time I don't wear a seatbelt is at the farm because I'm in and out of the vehicle and I'm driving 30 km/h max.

That reminds me that my friend who refuses to buckle up doesn't have a license, he has never had one, the guy keeps insisting that if a cop ever pulls him he will just bribe him and get away with it...which is why I really wish for an honest cop to pullhim over. They remove the license plates from your vehicle and I think that they even tow it away, plus they give you a huge ass fine.

[QUOTE="Laihendi"]It is stupid to mandate the use of seatbelts. Any intelligent person will use it anyways, anyone stupid enough to refuse to where one deserves the consequences of his actions, and anyone who forgets to wear it shouldn't be pulled over and fined for an honest mistake.Aljosa23

You'd have a point if it weren't for the fact that other drivers would be at risk too if you fly out your windshield onto traffic.

Roads should be privatized so that the owners of the roads can determine these kinds of rules for themselves.

[QUOTE="jimkabrhel"]

She probably made you change the radio station too. I hate that.

br0kenrabbit

I don't use the radio in my car. I like to pay attention to what's going on around me since so many people are IDIOTS behind the wheel.

I want to see how you would react to someone driving next to you with their system boomin

I think a bigger issue is that the stupids cause insurance rates to go up for everybody because of the increased medical expenses that come with getting hurt worse.

A guy flys out of his car and hits his head on the pavement, he's in a coma for two years after that. Guess who pays for those expensive bills? Everybody else.
