Don't know if anybody else has posted a topic like this but here it is: www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81529.html

Romney donated 29.4% of his income to charity, approximately $4 million.

Obama donated 21.8%, a little less than $800,000.

And Joe Biden donated a pitiful 1.5%, only $5,500. Even more shocking is that in the 10 before Biden ran for VP, he only donated $370 a year. I know plenty of common people who donate more than that.

Obviously Romney has more money to donate, so the amount he donates will be greater, but the percentage he donates is also greater than Biden and Obama combined.

And also shocking is that Romney left $1.8 million in donations off his return so he would pay higher than a 13% rate on his income. He could have had more money in his pocket, but he wasn't interested in that.

Look at and analyze the stats however you want. But the bottom line is Romney is not the greedy, selfish guy he is made out to be. If you want to point that finger at someone, point it at Biden. I mean seriously, 1.5%?

I don't doubt Obama is a fairly generous guy. But looking at the numbers, Romney is more generous.

Just putting it out there, many people don't realize this about Romney. Thoughts?

"More to give away" It's comparing the percentage they gave of their wealth, not the total dollar amount they contributed.

Er....

Having more to give still applies to that...... lol.

But still, pathetic to try to gloat over how much X person contributes to charity compared to y when they're both giving a lot.

Not much point to charity if it's a contest over who can give more. Besides, I think for both Obama and Romney probably a lot of what they give to charity just goes under charitable givings deductions on their income taxes anyway.

Yeah, the same people who got Prop 8 passed in California... this type of "charity" doesn't help him in my eyes :? Edit - from the article: "Finally, in Mitt Romney's case, church giving is not a simple matter of generosity. Unlike other churches (including Joe Biden's Catholic church) the Mormon faith denies full status to anyone who fails to donate enough of his or her annual salary. Mormonism is, in this way, a pay-to-play religion. Without paying the tithe, a believer may not enter a Mormon temple or participate fully in the activities of the faith. This is why Mormon giving is so much higher, per capita."

Biden has never really been that well off. He certainly hasn't suffered financially throughout his life but he's not really made that much money either.

Mormonism is so f*ckin' weird. They demand people pay money, yet they believe that you don't have to be a Mormon in life to get into Heaven. What a bizarre religion.

On top of this the Mormon church isn't actually very charitable (in the sense of giving aid to those who need it) itself. Kinda sad.

Maybe not compared to other politicians, but compared to most he's pretty wealthy. At the very least he can do better than 1.5 percent of his income and only five large.

The Mormon church spends that donation money on a lot more than just charitable services. They are a very politically active organization and those temples they build aren't exactly cheap.

"Romney didnt deduct all of his charitable donations for last year. He left $1.8 million in donations off his return in order to live up to a statement he made about always having paid at least a 13 percent tax rate on his income. "

Too bad the article doesn't break down which groups received money. I don't think all of Romney's donations were to the Mormon's, but who knows.

Which is why Romney doesn't bring this up during debates. The point is to show that Romney is generous, not just to show he is more generous than the other two.

And while he does have more to give away, the percentage is higher.

Like I said, no matter how you analyze the numbers, the point is to disprove a misconception about Romney.

But Biden's numbers are pitiful. And if he was not VP he would still probably only be donating $370 a year. To claim yourself a generous person with those numbers at your backing is just weak.

Yeah. This does fly in the face of the whole "Romney is a selfish rich guy" thing. Whatever, I accept that he's generous. Obama is also generous, he gave a decent amount.

All his net worth means is that he's poor with money. He's been making $170,000 a year for decades now.

Five grand is still a pathetic figure for the VP. He could afford a lot more, and should, especially since he's supporting Obama's "sacrifice" rhetoric.

Yeah, but Biden can do better than that. Jeez.

Expecting someone to donate sounds like a dick move.

That is the whole idea of Democrats. They want the people who have more to give more. So Biden should follow his own policies.

[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]Shows how terrible he is with money. KC_Hokie

So instead of bashing him for not giving enough to charity you're instead going to bash him for not having enough money?

For being terrible at managing money. The guy is too poor to donate much because he's pissed his money away on something.

Rogaine?

[QUOTE="-Sun_Tzu-"] His net worth is only $215,000, which for a 69 year old man, is not anything to brag about. The median net worth for his demographic is $232,000.

how much do federal senators get paid? I know Congressmen don't get government lodgings like the White House.

$174,000 + benefits.

Plus he gets a pension which is 80% of his salary.

If you crunch the numbers based on the amount he donated and the percentage of income it was he would have made over 350k last year.

Do all Senators get paid equally, or does Committee status effect pay? I think the Speaker of the House makes more money than other congressmen, I don't know if the same applies to the minority and majority leaders and the whips.

By the way, I think Romney served without pay when he was governor.
