I found this video that has some funny information about what the company did to 'bury' the memory of such a massive failure.  That E.T. game did suck big time.  does anyone remember it, or am i too old?
it's worth watching at least once.  and the song isn't that bad either.

I read in an issue of the Nintendo magazine that the company who made the E.T game had buried all of the remaining copies in a desert somewhere. Then NES had saved gaming from just being a trend and some other biased crap like that.

E.T. for the Atari 2600 is deemed to be one of the worst games ever made. During the holidays when it was released, over 2 million copies were sold. After Christmas, over 50% were returned. So, the company ended up shipping all of the returned or unreleased games to the New Mexico land fill to be dumped there.

I've actually thought about obtaining a copy of E.T. to my collection, but my Atari 2600 doesn't work that well anymore. Plus at the moment getting Shaq Fu is my bigger priority.
