Give it time, it's not really one of those books that just opens with a car chase and lots of explosions, there is hidden themes and messages, that will become apparent later on in the text as you read.

I actually picked it up because one of my friends was studying it for school and it sounded really interesting. There were a few parts in the novel that nearly made me cry I tell you. !!

The chapter that invovled rape kind of made me dislike the book, I know its a central theme, but seriously? The way it was described made me somewhat reluctant to read on.

It's a great book and I encourage you to give it a chance. I also read it back in high school and I liked it the moment I started reading it. I'm not even a book guy.

Are you Canadian and in 12th grade, by any chance? The Canadian novel curriculum is full of books with rape, apparently. In 8th grade we had to read some book about how it was the end of the world and the only two people left were a young girl and an old man, so he raped her repeatedly to repopulate, I suppose.

Rape isn't a central theme, friendship is, freedom is, the kites are symbolic of freedom, and as you will find out later on in the book some events take place that also link to the theme of freedom.

Kite Runner is a great book. Amir and Hassan are both interesting, very flawed characters.
