Putin stresses 'gay propaganda' law

Russian President Vladimir Putin sought Friday to reassure gay visitors to the Sochi Olympics that they are welcome in Russia but said they must "leave the children in peace."

Responding to a question from an Olympics volunteer during a visit in the Black Sea resort city, Putin vowed that gays face no discrimination in Russia and could feel "at ease."

But he emphasized that because of a Russian law banning gay "propaganda" among minors, they cannot express their views on gay rights issues to anyone under age.

Putin appeared to lump homosexuality and pedophilia together.

"We have no ban on nontraditional sexual relations. We have a ban on propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia, I want to underline that, on propaganda among minors," he said.

Putin insisted the measure isn't discriminatory.

"We aren't banning anything, we aren't rounding up anyone, we have no criminal punishment for such relations, unlike many other countries," he said. "One can feel relaxed and at ease, but please leave the children in peace."

why not? The Olympics have been held in worse places, like Nazi Germany (though the decision to have the Olympics in Germany back then may have been made before the Nazis came to power, and the world didn't realize how bad the Nazis were back then) and in the Soviet Union (1980).

Article 29, Section 2 of the Russian Federation Constitution;

2. The propaganda or agitation instigating social, racial, national or religious hatred and strife shall not be allowed. The propaganda of social, racial, national, religious or linguistic supremacy shall be banned.

What Putin is saying runs parallel and also contradicts this.

More shocking to me is that the winter games is taking place in the warmest place in Russia. Sochi has a subtropical climate ffs!

I bet this is an attempt to move russia away from the left. Many people still have strong feelings towards the USSR and the communist party is powerful. So putin is pushing towards the right to stop the communist from getting more power.

Maybe, who knows. I didn't know that there was still a lot of attachment to the bad old days of the USSR. People complain in the U.S. complain about Putin as it is, imagine if the commies came back to power.

why take the chance. It's a liability to have a man that is attracted to males sleeping in a tent with a bunch of boy scouts, and I doubt the group wants to get sued.

I'm pretty sure that there were lots of people in the West who linked homosexuality with pedophilia as late as a decade ago (wouldn't be surprised if it's still going on), so it's not too shocking for me that this kind of thing happened in Russia which is easily 20 years behind the West in most aspects. After all, a common way to demonize a group of individuals is to portray them as a threat to "vulnerable" members of society so that you can rile people up to "retaliate" against said group in "self-defense", and linking child molesters to gays is a very old tradition amongst homophobes.

Don't waste your time. Gays preach acceptance, but what they really mean is everybody but them. They expect you to accept them, yet if you don't, they can't accept you. They should practice what they preach, but they don't. They just attack you if you don't accept them and support their gay lifestyle.
