I thought this was really interesting. It seems that a **** load of people call the same thing different things. Even within the same states/cities. Sorry UK, but this map only features Canada and US de A. Oh and by the way of you vote Pop your not a normal human being. Recent studies show this.

Soda.

When I say 'pop,' it sounds like 'pot,' and I hate having to clarify everytime I talk.

No, I don't have a lisp, I just say soda instead of pop.

Phonetics is serious business.

That's why I thought it was interesting lol. What scares me is that there are still many empty spots. Have they not developed a name of the drink yet? Only time will tell. BTW this would make an excellent Supreme Court case. We need one word instead of 6. :P

this is why organisms have scientific names: mountian lion, puma, cougar; all the same animal but names vary where you live, it is known everywhere as the "Puma concolor" that name is universal. We should apply this to soda and pop and just call it a carbonated beverage or soft drink.

Yeah, phonetics is serious business, and if your voiceless bilabial and alveolar obstruents sound the same, you've got a problem.

Soda. This is not opinion. I despise people who say pop. It has ruined relationships for me. I'm not trying to be funny, but I hate it each and every time people say "pop" in reference to soda, and will fight for a death penalty for people who say it.

I think I obsess because 'pop' has so many meanings in our language, like it's a type of music and has many verb meanings to, wheras 'soda' just means one thing.

That's why I try to avoid confusion.

I have no speech problems.

I didn't mean it didn't have several different definitions...lol. I'm wondering why that has anything to do with using it as a noun. Lol.

If anything it's the energy drink that inherits the earth. The only thing that can beat an energy drink is a caffiene and adrenaline cocktail injected directly into the brain.

It's both. What term you use is simply indicative of that area you were raised in. Pop, soda, coke, etc. are all just different dialects. I refer to it as pop simply because that is the dialect of the area. If I moved to an area that uses the term soda, I'd begin to call it soda.
